The Greats, my 6th novel: Fall ‘27

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Join us on Fri. 10/16 from 8-9 pm for a Conversation with Lee Upton hosed by Jennifer Gilmore. Upton is a local literary treasure-known best for her poetry. But she's recently been publishing critically acclaimed novels as well.

With her newest novel, Tabitha,Stay Up, a sequel to the Thurber Humor Writing Award semi-finalist, Tabitha, Get Up, launching in September I thought it would be a great opportunity to talk to her about writing in many genres, humor writing, the writing process and all aspects of developing her singular and unforgettable characters.

Today, in @literaryhub , an open letter from Jewish writers to the @jewishbookcouncil . We hope they will respond with concrete action that meets this moment - any Jewish-identified writer is encouraged to sign, and we hope you’ll share widely! It’s long past time for our Jewish literary institutions to prioritize liberation for *all,* and to meaningfully include narratives and writers fighting and speaking out for Palestinian liberation.

Link to sign at the bottom of the letter, which can be found at https://lithub.com/an-open-letter-to-the-jewish-book-council-from-a-concerned-group-of-jewish-writers/

I am exhausted & inspired after a few days in LA to hug people I love, listen to writers I admire, perform a new poem, stroll with beloveds, not see other beloveds nearly enough, panel with the most wonderful humans, and so much much more, plus a little sunshine.

AWP Los Angeles: beautiful hikes and meals and readings and conversations with beloveds. So many forces are working to divide and depress us. What a thing to lean into community and joy.

I’ve been on several panels over the 20 years I’ve attended AWP Conferences but none have felt as important that this one. See you in L.A.?

AWP is coming up & the calendar is starting to fill. I’m looking forward to the annual whirlwind of writers, readings, panels, run-ins, meals, bookfair, drinks, and parties — but not so much looking forward to the inevitable laryngitis. You can find me on Thursday at 1:45 on a panel with @jenwgilmore @irinareyn1 @czoffness & Moriel Rothman-Zecher. On Friday night, I’ll be part of a reading with @tindsaylurner & Caren Beilin & many more lovely writers representing @fictioncollective2 csupoetrycenter @cwruenglish @dorothyproject @rescuepress & @communitymausoleum. See you soon writers! #awp25

Interested in a fun new English course that questions what it means to be American? Try English 128 with Professor Gilmore !
What makes Jewish American Literature Jewish? What makes it American? In this course, we will consider the Jewish American experience in American literature by focusing on Jewish American fiction, essays, film and television that define, revise and critique “American identity.” What is the role of national, personal and cultural histories, of language and gender, in Americans' self-definitions? What stereotypes are confronted and upheld in these texts? We will explore the various ways the Jewish American experience has been defined and examine its connection to immigration, acculturation, alienation, intergenerational trauma and the rise of material wealth. In doing so we'll look at a fundamental question: Is there such a thing as “Jewish Fiction” and if so, will it continue to evolve?

What a wonderful intimate evening of literature at the Ice House. I loved hearing Stephanie Powell Watts, Lee Upton and Jennifer Gilmore read from works in progress and now I can't wait to read their forthcoming publications.

The Ice House is just down the hill from my house, what a treasure in my own backyard. The programming presented by @icehousetonight is so wide ranging. You've got to keep an eye on their schedule.

Have I mentioned lately that Bethlehem is truly the best small city in America?
