It was a few weeks ago, but I’m still so happy about Hellfest 2026. It was possibly the best and/or most fun show Recon has ever played. Thank you to everyone who was involved and/or went bananas during the Recon set.
I’m trying to get in the habit of taking more pictures with friends. I remembered a little bit more than usual, but also kept forgetting. It was really great to see everyone, some true surprises, and even make some new friends.
There were so many great bands that played, but I was only there for one day, and hey what am I a journalist, so I want to shout out two bands in particular that I was fortunate enough to catch:
Turmoil is a band that I have seen play a couple “farewell shows” over the decades, and I am so glad that they have once again broken their promise and reunited. The first time I ever saw them was in the Anchor era, and the crowd wasn’t participating enough for the first couple songs, so the band played the rest of their set on the floor. That always stuck with me: if the crowd isn’t coming to you, it’s your responsibility to go to them. Mathematically speaking, the Turmoil guys have got to be a few years older than me, but they went absolutely nuts the whole time they played. They continue to set the standard. We got to play with them also in California earlier this year, and the next morning, 3 of us were wearing our brand new Turmoil sweatshirts like we were a matching family going to Disneyworld.
Wings of Scarlet was another band that was really important for me to see. Back when Recon toured for weeks at a time, WOS was one of the very few bands that we could all agree to listen to in the van, no matter what, any time. We used to jam some of their riffs at practices 20 years ago, just for fun. Happy to report they still sound exactly like the CD. I wasn’t sure a guy’s voice could even make some of those sounds in real time. Turns out that many things are possible.
Another couple things about Turmoil and WOS: their lyrics are just as relevant now as when those albums came out. Also? Incredibly nice guys.
Like I said, there were LOTS of great bands, even on just that first day, but I don’t got all day alright.
Having fun rules.
