On August 22, 1942, Michel Fokine died after contracting a serious illness while on tour with Ballet Theatre in Mexico. Irina Baronova, accompanied by Lucia Chase and Jerome Robbins, describes her last moments with Fokine:

“Lucia, Jerry and I took them (Mr. And Mrs. Fokine) to the railway station and installed them in their compartment. Fokine tried to put on a brave face, but he had aged, and his grey face was pinched with pain. We said our goodbyes, wishing them bon voyage. Bon? How could it be? I felt so sad for them both. As I stepped into the corridor, I heard Fokine’s voice calling me back to their compartment. I approached the great man and he took both my hands in his. ‘I just wanted you to know,’ he said, ‘I loved working with you.’

How precious those words were—and still are—to me. A lump rose in my throat, I burst into tears and did the unthinkable, hugged him, mumbling through my tears, ‘Thank you, thank you, I owe you so much!’

Jerry knocked on the compartment window, making signs to me to get off the train. I quickly kissed Mme Fokine, then, blinded by tears, joined Lucia and Jerry on the platform.

Fokine was very ill when he reached home. His doctor diagnosed him with pleurisy and put him in the hospital. Pleurisy then turned into double pneumonia. On 22 August the company received the dreaded telegram informing us that Fokine had died a few minutes after midnight. He was only sixty-two.”
