Detroit Pride Parade. 🌈

Sunday, June 7th. It’s a beautiful day in the D.

Pride is happiness, color, celebration, community, and the freedom to be unapologetically yourself. Pride is love, and a celebration of love. It’s a reminder that everyone deserves to be seen, accepted, and valued for who they are.

You may not be part of the LGBTQ+ community, but you can still be an ally. I am an ally.

For those who use church or faith as a reason to be anti-LGBTQ+: I was born and raised in a Catholic family. I spent 12 years in Catholic school, and one thing I learned was to love and respect people. I’m still not sure where some people learned that hate belongs anywhere in faith because of someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity. I might have missed that class.

That belief became even more personal lately. Scott, my dear friend, I still remember your surprise when you first opened up to me about your identity. But it didn’t matter to me—I loved you exactly as you were. I loved you because we were great friends, and because you helped me find my own place in the photography community. We connected and have been close friends since that first Cameras & Coffee.

So today, and every day, I choose to be an ally.

Love,Javi ❤️

The powerhouse behind the scenes, Jackie Edwards. ✨

If you know the Detroit photography community, you know Jackie. A retired “serious hobbyist” with a professional’s eye and a mentor’s heart, she has been a major supporter of local creatives for years. 📸🎨

From her early days making art as a child to her current work across photography and painting, Jackie’s life is a testament to staying curious. Most recently, she was instrumental in coordinating the very first aartherapy workshop at the Pope Francis Center right here in Detroit. We truly couldn’t have done it without her coordination and vision.

Jackie reminds us that art isn’t just about what you produce—it’s about the community you build along the way. 🏙️🙌

Community is everything. Who is someone in your life that supports your creative journey? Let’s give them their flowers in the comments. 👇

“Art allows you to explore your own imagination, which helps you find out who you truly are.” 🎞️✨

We’re going behind the scenes with the talented Amanda J. Cain ( @amandajcain ). Beyond her work with the Detroit Pistons, Amanda is a deep believer in the “slow craft”—the research and dedication it takes to truly master an art form.

She joined aartherapy to help others find their way, focusing on how art helps us let go of the things that clutter our mental health. For Amanda, imagination isn’t just for fun; it’s the path to finding out who you are and finding peace.

Legacy in Every Stroke. ✨

Miriam Uhura’s name is a gift from her father—a nod to his love for Star Trek and the legendary Nichelle Nichols. But when the world went quiet in 2020 and she faced the loss of the man who named her, Miriam didn’t just look to the stars. She looked to the canvas.

By day, she’s a professional piercer, navigating the precision of the needle. But all day, she is a painter, navigating the fluidity of grief and the vibrancy of the Black experience.

The Inspiration:
Drawing from the raw, dignifying lens of Deana Lawson and the rhythmic energy of Solange’s “Bad Girls,” Miriam’s work is a masterclass in visual storytelling. Her voice is one of the most vital in the Detroit art scene right now.

The Mission:
We sat down with Miriam to discuss how art serves as her survival strategy—a way to find peace when the “Doom Scroll” gets too loud.

Swipe through to see her and the soul of her work on Slide 4+6. ➡️

Join the Conversation:
Miriam started painting to cope with a profound loss. What is the one thing you do that makes the world feel quiet again? Let’s talk in the comments. 👇
