Falling doesn’t have to mean living in fear of your next step. 💜 @jerry_figgiani

In recognition of Fall Prevention Month, Oasis welcomed Jerry, owner of East Coast Black Belt Academy in Middle Island, for an interactive lesson in Ukemi — the principles of falling safely.

Jerry worked with members of our senior community to demonstrate techniques designed to help protect the body during a fall, while breaking down the fear of falling through education, movement, and hands-on practice.

Because fall prevention isn’t only about avoiding falls, it’s also about building confidence and knowing how to respond if one happens.

Follow Oasis Rehabilitation and Nursing for more programs focused on keeping our community active, educated, and confident.

At first glance, some of the young athletes in attendance may have seen Fred Fusaro as simply an older man. But as the evening unfolded - through stories of his lasting impact on Sachem football, Suffolk County athletics, and generations of student-athletes - that perception quickly changed.

By the time Coach Fusaro spoke about respect, leadership, and hard work, it was clear to everyone in the room that they were in the presence of someone truly special.

The night marked the latest session of the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame in partnership with the Suffolk County Police Athletic League-PAL Leadership Institute and East Coast Black Belt Academy, hosted at the dojo of Suffolk County Sports Hall of Famer Jerry Figgiani, who played for Fusaro at Sachem in the late 1970s.

With moments like this, the foundation is set for even more meaningful experiences throughout 2026.
