Whew! This summer has been an absolute whirlwind. We welcomed Ember on July 1st, River turned 2, and we moved to Boulder CO very shortly after. Having Ali @ali.caudill capture one of the final days before we said goodbye to the east coast was a no brainer (despite the total chaos that ensued getting everyone ready, fed, and not feral for said photos 🤣). I came to DC for grad school to try out a new city. I didn’t know anyone. I found a couple of roommates on Craigslist and took a major leap of faith, plus I knew I could move back to Chicago once my program was over if I didn’t like it here. Well, a decade later and here we are! DC and then Del Ray was a sweet sweet chapter full of learning, growing, finding my voice, taking chances, and twists and turns I would have never predicted. New friends, new experiences, marrying the hotdog food truck guy, evolving in so many ways, and just so much life — the highs and the lows, and I’m so grateful for everything this city and the people in it taught me. So here we are taking another major leap of faith and moving to a new place, this time with our two girlies (and of course, there’s Milo). So many people have asked us why / why Boulder? The honest answer is because it just feels intuitively right for us. That’s it! Sometimes it is that simple. Cue mountain music.

Jesse & Ben’s, a fast-growing frozen potato brand founded by restaurant operators Jesse Konig and Ben Johnson, has raised $10M in a Series A led by Greycroft, following rapid traction since launching its first products in June 2024. Do you want to minimize risk and save money? 🙋🏻 A restaurant's owner smart move. One of the best decisions you can make is buying or leasing a second generation space for your business. A second generation commercial space refers to properties that have been previously occupied and built out by a prior tenant. Unlike "shell space" (first generation) which is raw and unfinished, second-generation spaces have undergone some level of interior construction and build-out, such as walls, ceilings, flooring, and sometimes even specialized features like kitchens or restrooms. They are not always easily available. Join us on ⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠The DMV Business Show as we share the journey of Jesse Konig, Co-Founder and CEO of Jesse & Ben's and Swizzler Crispy Chicken + Smash Burgers. We delve into Jesse's background, his journey from food truck to brick-and-mortar restaurant to consumer packaged goods, and the challenges he faced along the way. Jesse met his co-founder Ben while studying at Wake Forest University. Initially, they studied business with a focus on finance but later changed their major to English and entrepreneurship. During their college days, they launched a food truck business on campus, which laid the foundation for their future ventures. After graduating, they launched a food truck in the DMV area, which eventually evolved into Swizzler and Jesse and Ben's. The idea for a food truck, Swizzler Gourmet Hot Dogs, was born out of a desire to fill a gap in the college food scene. They started operating in DC and eventually moved to farmer's markets, eventually leaving hot dogs behind and focusing on burgers. Jesse and Ben chose DC as the location for their business due to its strong alumni network, good infrastructure, and the opportunity to be the best food truck in the city. After years of success as a food truck, Jesse and Ben decided to pivot to a brick-and-mortar restaurant. They signed a lease in 2019 and began building out the space in March 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Instead of hiring professionals for the entire construction process, they decided to take a hands-on approach, doing much of the work themselves, including demolition and installation of new features. Growing up in Freehold, NJ, Jesse was inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit and the iconic music scene.  Did you know that Jesse and Ben started their food business in college? They saw an opportunity to fill the gap in campus cuisine and launched a hot dog cart that quickly gained popularity!  From food trucks to brick-and-mortar, Jesse and Ben have seen it all! They evolved their concept to include burgers and other menu items, and even launched a frozen french fry brand, Jesse and Ben's, available nationwide! So, what made them choose Washington D.C. as the location for their business? It was a combination of factors, including a strong alumni network, a fun place to live, and existing infrastructure for food trucks!  When COVID-19 hit, they were already in the process of building out their first brick-and-mortar restaurant.
