POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

🤹 Week one in Jingmai is already under way.

Our residents have quickly made themselves at home, stepping right into their projects, field research, and studio practice. The road into the mountain is long, but the peaceful pace here makes every step worth it.
Looking forward to a month of mountain life, tea, local weaving traditions, and shared moments with our wonderful community.

„The result looks quiet and soft, but that’s not what the process is about.“

Jessica @jessicaslever is a textile artist and painter. She makes her own paint from pigments and soy milk, so she can work on cotton and linen. Mixing the colours beforehand is a ritual that slows her down and makes her choose more carefully.

She left art school in the US during covid and came back to Amsterdam. Right now she’s working on a series about the unconscious and the phases we go through as people, which she also sees in the moon. Myths, culture and storytelling passed down through generations inspire her, as does anything handmade with a rich history, like sewing and embroidery.

People often describe her work as soft and feminine. Jessica sees it differently: it’s physical work, sewing and making by hand, and the softness is the result of all that labour.
Next to her studio practice, Jessica runs a zine collective under the name Off the Leash. They gather work from artists and writers around specific themes and publish independently each season.

Every month we go in conversation with artists and makers from all over the world. This month we talked with artist Jessica.
Her work is a conversation between textiles and painting. Hand-painted soy-based pigments on silk and cotton. But it’s not just about the materials, it’s about exploring the worlds inside us. The worlds we feel but can’t always see.

Here we go off I take ya, dip trip, flip fantasia!🎙
Had an amazing exhibition at @vrijpaleis from March 6-7-8 ,sharing the space with other talented artists and connecting with new people was super inspiring in every way! Every corner held a new story and moments like these remind me that art and friendship becomes even more beautiful when shared.🥨
