an ode to Jessica

I’ve thought about many ways to say this and approached it in much of the same way we approach braids: how will I structure it? where will I write it down? what pen will I use?

Eventually, I decided to use my phone- a first in recording such things.

For miller & I, braids have been more than just a hairstyle. “fave face to paint, fave head to braid” means more to me than the short caption always attached to these pics.

From the first time at 17, when I was bald - hours before we were meant to be leaving for our first girls’ holiday at 3am because we massively underestimated how long this sh*t takes-to my recent 25th birthday…we’ve shared laughs, tears, frustration, hearts, traumas, philosophies, song lyrics, a seamless rap of high school by nicki and lil wayne, an entire three series of chewing gum… just to be left hanging at the end of it.

And everything in between.

Thank you, jessie, for always being my guinea pig, helping my talents flourish, and being a sister, a friend and a confidant. Thank you for teaching me values I now stand strong on, and for making me belly laugh along the way.

I adore you.

Eighteen hours spent on one project, with nights out in between while it was half done; tackling it tired, drunk, stoned, and growing up together.

Thank you for helping me find my passions in more ways than one, in work and in life; and for providing a catalyst for my dreams.

ur the best. 🖤👑
