Chefs Roll Kitchen Ink Contest Entry
@chefsroll
All the good photos were taken by @indymoonmedia

Here’s the story of my latest tattoo.
Literally, it’s a month since the finish….

I won one of those silly Instagram contests where you tag everyone and everybody (insert foot in mouth here) and got a full day session with the tattooer who had previously tattooed my other forearm.

In London.

The catch. She was leaving at the end of that month to move back to Romania.

So as one would, I booked an on the fly trip to London to get tattooed.
For free.
Duh.
I mean how does that math not add up?!

Spent a full day with a design idea @yuki_zerkjad and I had chatted about, and during the session realized there would be so much more work to do. And while you know London is always an easy twist my arm travel excuse, Romania just sounds so far away, like a really massive trip.

So let’s find someone to finish it. In SoCal.

Man was that wildly beyond successful.

Enter Les. @les22tattoo A twenty something bad ass creative in a tattoo shop in a very Chinese part of Los Angeles, we immediately bonded. She loved the idea not only of finishing someone else’s starting point, but of having my complete faith in her taking creative license to in fact make the piece her own. Something she would be super proud of.

We also talked about taking the piece up and blasting over a previous upper arm tattoo @jessoxoxo to create a complete sleeve, that felt like her. Her rad style going over a tattoo that was more traditional in approach.

We’ve become the best of friends. She’s been to San Diego for a summer weekend filled with sushi hand rolls, epic brunch and the fair. She brought Szechuan takeaway as a hosting gift when she came for the visit. I mean c’mon now. What’s not to love here.

We’ve talked about everything. All the fun stuff, the hard conversations, all of it. We text all the time. About life, dogs, music, getting stuck in airports (last night in the same one) artsy things, food, and of course, food!

We’ve had three sessions since and the work is complete. Complete. Beautiful. Bonded. And feels in style and tone with my other forearm.

With roots in a government bashing punk

This was a helluva year. Graduated outpatient therapy and changed jobs. My damn dog died. Went on a cruise. Went on another cruise. Attended a gallery grand opening. Grew my hair out for half a second. Said goodbye to Hank. Got Ginger. Went back a week or so later and got Dottie. Got ordained. Attended my first protest. Went into the woods and bashed the shit out of some trees. Got new stickers, a frazzle-dazzled panda, orca, and a masterpiece Ian Malcolm. And got my arm worked on A LOT, covering everything from just above the elbow down to the wrist (one more session to go)... I am already forgetting what used to be under there.
