What a night! 💚

Thank you to every single person who joined us for #OurPowerOurFuture and made MHET’s 5-Year Anniversary Gala so special. To our honorees, sponsors, partners, neighbors, and everyone who showed up to celebrate with us, we’re so grateful to have you in this community. Your support has helped make these first five years possible, and we’re so excited for what we’ll continue building together.

Five years in, we know this is only the beginning. Here’s to the people, partnerships, and collective power that will carry this work forward.

Thank you for being part of our story. 💚

One of the best parts of celebrating five years of MHET is getting to celebrate the people who have been part of this journey with us. 💚

From opening doors and sharing their expertise to believing in our vision and helping us imagine what’s possible, these five honorees have each been part of MHET’s story in a meaningful way.

Tomorrow, we’ll be celebrating Jeszack Gammon (@jeszack), The J.M. Kaplan Fund (@thejmkaplanfund), Foley Hoag (@foleyhoag), Bill Calderara (@ulstersavings), and Pastor Sonia Urrutia (@iglesia.amigos) as we recognize the many ways they’ve helped move this work forward.

We’re so grateful to have them in our corner, and we can’t wait to celebrate them alongside the community that has made these first five years possible. Swipe through to get to know our honorees and learn a little more about why we’re celebrating them. See you tomorrow at Our Power, Our Future: MHET’s 5-Year Anniversary Gala!

This month’s #CuratedShelf at Rough Draft is brought to you by @upstatecolor!

Upstate Color began as a simple desire: to connect with other people of color living in the Hudson Valley and surrounding areas. What started as an online call for community quickly grew into a vibrant network of BIPOC folks who wanted to find each other, show up, and build something together.

Today, Upstate Color exists as a growing, volunteer-run community of BIPOC members connected through WhatsApp, Instagram, and in-person events. The WhatsApp group hosts a wide range of subgroups inspired by the diverse needs and interests of members: Herbalists, Circus, Raising the Next Generation, Political, Bulletin Board, and many more. They organize gatherings that get folks into the landscape and into community—happy hours, hikes, food pop-ups, youth and family activities, and other offerings that support connection without the pressure of being the “only one in the room.”

To learn more, visit upstatecolor.com!

Their curated shelf of literary favorites will be up throughout the month of August.

i’m rich!

thank you to the beautiful people at @stonewoodny for making my 35th birthday so special. jossy baked me a vanilla sponge cake with raspberry buttercream frosting, raspberry puree, and an elderflower soak, and doted on me with princess treatment all weekend 🥹 we also visited @diaartfoundation to see tehching hsieh’s lifeworks exhibit, which was very very inspiring to me. hsieh is a taiwanese performance artist whose life and absence from the art world *were* his art.

turning 35 feels very different. this solar return is showing me the enormous sense of trust i’ve cultivated in myself and my path. y’all know i have big dreams, and while i still have many milestones and goals i want to reach, i know that it’s a lifetime’s work, and i will get there. i am unstoppable! & look at how much abundance, peace, and beauty i have gathered on my way to my grandest success 🍒⭐️🌀

p.s. more bday reflections on my substack, u know where to go

This Wednesday, Upstate Color was honored to receive the inaugural @hudsytv Connect Award.

It’s been a pleasure to watch this BIPOC community grow from a simple search for connection into the thriving, joyful, and collaborative collective it is today. From that first IRL gathering under a rainy tent to now, with hundreds of conversations happening at once, so many events and ideas taking shape, and the energy that I see carry through every Happy Hour, it’s been really special to witness.

While I’m not upstate full time, the search for safe space and familiar faces in both work and life is something I’m always navigating. What UPCO offers in that regard, for myself and for others, is really meaningful.

I’ve had the good fortune of being around at the right time, alongside @jordancasteel, @ninatucker, and @jeszack, contributing where I can via my obsession with website updates and pdfs.

Congratulations to each and every member who make Upstate Color what it is 🤍

Last night, Upstate Color was honored to receive the inaugural @hudsytv Connect Award 🎉

Over 100 organizations and individuals were nominated for the 4 different categories, and almost 1,000 community members voted for the finalists. We are tremendously thankful to everyone who elevated our work and took the time to vote for us. UPCO began as humble and vulnerable quest to find community. What started as a simple discord chat has evolved into a thriving, empowered, and collaborative collective that allows hundreds of people to connect. We are honored to do this work, and continually astounded by the way YOU continue to grow and show up for one another. We’re all just working to meet each other where we’re at. All the love in the world to everyone who continues to move in faith with us.

Thank you @hudsytv for an incredible evening. Major congratulations to all of the nominees, awardees, and all of the many hands who work to make moments like this so special.

This win is for all of us❣️

Last night gave us LIFE!

Lee Lam Love (dynamic duo of @saynomore.bet from @enokicatskills and the beloved @shannpo) popped up in the @campkingston kitchen to hold us down with a mind blowing menu while our beautiful community came together to sing, laugh, and dance. It is so amazing to see people create such tremendous, radical joy in the midst of all the turmoil around us.

Happy Hour is a gathering that fills our cup to the brim every time. Thank you for showing up and showing out for another fantastic evening. This one was real special— we’ll see you next month!! 🫂💕

Sing About Me, I'm Alive
Oil on canvas

First piece in my project, "The Future Is Black, Octavia Told Me." An Afro-Futurist project that explores black bodies as time vessels (Operating simoutanously as past, present, and future) Although the 1920s informs the physicality of the subjects, this piece challenges modern ownership of black creation and projects a future where black people truly own what we create. A future where the person who invest is black, the person who creates is black, the one who buys is black and it become a cycle where all the benefits of this process goes to the black community solely. The title of the piece plays off of Kendrick Lamar's "Sing About Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst" where he leaves the hood because he is able to profit off of his craft but he had to leave alot of people behind. In this projected future, no one is left behind because the whole community benefits.

Another HUGE shoutout to @the3sugars and @utaartistspace for giving me the space to showcase my new work!
