Wie viel bringt es, wenn wir weniger fliegen und warum reichen die heutigen Massnahmen noch lange nicht für das Erreichen des Netto-Null-Ziels? Urs Ziegler, er leitete bis Ende 2025 die Abteilung Umwelt des BAZL und vertrat die Schweiz im Umweltkomitee der ICAO, gibt Antworten auf diese Fragen. Im Interview plädiert er für pragmatische, international abgestimmte Lösungen und zeigt, welches die wichtigsten Hebel für eine klimaverträgliche Luftfahrt sind.

Grosse Pläne mit Blended Wing Bodies

Das US-Start-up JetZero setzt auf den Blended Wing Body, um energieeffizientere Airliner auf den Markt zu bringen. Der Demonstrator in Originalgrösse soll 2027 erstmals abheben. Ein Newcomer zwischen Airbus und Boeing wäre zweifellos wünschenswert, doch der Weg zu einem zertifizierten Verkehrsflugzeug ist lang. Immerhin hat JetZero prominente Airline-Partner und selbst die US Air Force auf seiner Seite.

Today I sat in on an economic development update from Brent Christensen, President and CEO of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce, and I took notes for you:

🚚 More than 100 people move to the area every day
🔋 Toyota’s battery plant in nearby Liberty has 3,000+ employees, with a goal of 5,000 by about 2034
✈️ PTI has 14 nonstop destinations and about 50 daily flights
🎓 18 colleges and universities in the region, with about 120,000 students
💵 Cost of living is 6.1% below the national average
🌳 And when the workday’s done, there are greenways, lake trails and parks all over town

Check out this business class cabin.

JetZero’s blended wing body is designed to carry around 250 passengers, roughly 767-300 capacity, with about 5,000nm of range.

The big claim is 30 to 50% better fuel efficiency, but the cabin is just as interesting. Because the fuselage and wing are effectively one structure, you get a much wider, more open interior than on a conventional aircraft.

If they can make the economics work, this could be a very different long haul experience. Beware #Airbus and #Boeing

The Blended Wing Body, or BWB, concept is one @NASA has been studying for quite some time, and most recently companies like @JetZero_official are seeking to adapt these aircraft to commercial use.

The design offers significant aerodynamic and efficiency benefits over traditional aircraft and boasts tremendous internal volume, but challenges such as airport footprint and passenger evacuation are issues that need to be resolved ... not to mention overcoming the negative connotation of having 15 middle seats in a row!

JetZero has closed a $100 million senior secured term loan facility led by Pinegrove Partners and Silicon Valley Bank, a division of First Citizens Bank, to accelerate development of its all-wing Z4 aircraft program. The funding will support technology maturation, manufacturing of its Jet1 demonstrator, and construction of its U.S. production and testing facilities in Greensboro, N.C.; CEO and co-founder Tom O’Leary said the capital will help advance tooling and production as JetZero targets Z4 entry into service in the early 2030s.
