October 3v3 Tournament was a blast!! Can’t wait to get more players involved at our next one Black Friday! So many advantages of 3v3 but the best is giving athletes a chance to compete outside their normal team structure.

Fall Training Camp Part III

Putting footwork to the test for players of all levels and having them attack off a live dribble in a straight line challenges three things. First, their pick-ups, it’s important to snap the ball into place off the bounce. Second, their balance, we work on building their balance in the warm up and then begin to apply it full speed on a pull up shot. Third, their power transfer - from forward momentum, planting powerfully into the floor, and driving up to elevate into a shot.

SHOOT MID RANGE BEFORE THREES!! Players, especially middle schoolers need to be put in situations where their physical tools don’t limit their range and results. We can tell them over and over that makes and misses don’t matter, but they’re naturally going to get discouraged if we start launching 3s when they’re barely ready for 15 footers. Keep them engaged, start with the mid range and then build out from there.

Fall Training Camp Part II

Building the base for shooting needs to be the first priority. Warming up with movement patterns that mimic shooting footwork is part one, part two starts with building the muscle memory for that movement pattern. Great shooters have great footwork!

Fall Training Camp Part I

Focusing on footwork and gathering into the shot is so important and that base is something players often overlook. Building different ways to develop into a workout is an easy way to hit it over and over again. A warm up routine to get the athletes moving but also building the muscle memory of that gather is one of my favorite ways to start a large group workout. Then comes the progressions throughout the workout.. Part II coming soon.

All good things must come to an end!

After four great seasons, and three Emmy nominations, it’s time to put the “Roundabout” series in park… for now. Thanks to everyone who took a ride and shared their stories.

A BIG shout out to @fox2detroit photojournalist Marcus Myers who made each story feel special!
