I used to think design was just making something look good. It’s not. It’s making sure it works for a real human. Save this if you care about how things feel, not just how they look.

Industrial design is really the whole life cycle of a product - sketches, materials, ergonomics, and what happens when it’s done being used. That’s the part people miss. The best designs aren’t just beautiful.

They’re comfortable, useful, and make sense the second you use them. That’s especially true in cars - if you can’t reach it, understand it, or trust it, the design failed. What’s one product you use every day that actually gets this right?

What happens when old-school hot rod craftsmanship meets modern design, technology, and nearly three decades of family tradition?

Dom grew up in the shop his dad, Dave, started in 1997 and later brought his Industrial Design background from Syracuse University back into the family business. Today, that combination influences everything from CAD and 3D modeling to fabrication, product development, and some seriously memorable SEMA builds.

We get into the stories behind Tucci Hot Rods, working with Ford, the wild Raptor-powered Mercedes 190E, the Blue Maverick, Power Tour, Top Gear, Larry Chen, and what it really takes to build long-term relationships with manufacturers and suppliers.

There are plenty of business lessons in this one too, including why:
• Timeless design beats chasing trends
• Great builds can become great marketing
• Industry relationships are earned over time
• Product development can help a custom shop grow
• Hands-on learning still matters

Dom also shares some great advice for the next generation looking to build a career in the automotive aftermarket.

Remember one of the best in show cars at MotorCity Foxfest 2026 ? Yeah that's it. Such a bad ass collage of metal fabrication. I was surprised at the color they picked since it was a Jalpeno red car. Rick Love from @vintageair_ said the quiet part out loud: The industry doesn’t have a talent problem - it has a connection problem.

Drop a 🔥 if you’ve seen the gap too.

Tag the shop owner, builder, or mentor who still makes time to answer questions. What stood out most to me: The best way to get young people into cars is still the oldest one - talk to them in person.

Coffee and Cars might be the new entry point because not everyone has the patience for a 4-day show anymore.

Relatable builds matter - the Fox bodies, OBS trucks, Monte Carlos, and even clean daily drivers are what make people stop and say, “I had one of those.”

That’s the real opportunity: meet people where they already are, then give them a reason to stay. Maybe the next great builder is already at the show - they just haven’t been asked yet. Listen to the full conversation 👆
