Avant Black 1.5 interlude series: Costumes!!!

In the case that you haven’t begun planning your Halloween costume, or you’re rushing to figure out what to wear for the party. Our team member Kamal assembled some quick and easy ideas to help you not only be a talking point, but a curated and aware Avant-Black baddie. The idea of this post is that every costume idea should not be followed exactly, but to generate some creativity behind some. Focusing mainly on people who we see as Avant-Black we wanted to make both fun and informed costume ideas that you can find in your nearest thrift store/friends closet.

Legacy in Color: Celebrating Black History Through Art
February 26 - March 22

To our incredible artists and our amazing community,

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making Legacy in Color such a powerful and unforgettable experience. To the artists, thank you for trusting us with your stories, your voices, and your creativity. Your work brought depth, beauty, and meaning to our gallery, and it truly left a lasting impact on everyone who walked through our doors.

To our community, thank you for showing up, for supporting, for engaging, and for embracing this exhibit with so much love. The energy, conversations, and connections we witnessed throughout the run of the show were nothing short of inspiring.

This exhibit was more than just art on walls, it was a shared experience, a celebration, and a moment of reflection and unity. We felt the love with every appointment and it meant everything to us.

We are so grateful to have experienced this journey together and can’t wait to continue celebrating art, culture, and community with you all in the future. 💛

Last night I attended the opening reception for the Legacy in Color Exhibition at the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center @svculturalartsctr It is truly an honor to be a part of this show with all of the other amazing and talented artists that were selected to represent black history through the arts. It was a pleasure to meet and congregate on stage with y’all to speak on our experiences as artist. I hope to stay in touch and collaborate with y’all someday! 3 of 5 my pieces that were part of the show sold on opening night. Thank you to everyone that lended their eyes, listened, and showed love last night. The show will be up until March 22nd. Truly grateful for this experience 🙏🏾 now it’s time to get back to work.
Respectfully and with Love 🖤 - JNB

Featured Artist: Ajani Tyehmiba (@jhediiiii )

About the artist: “Ajani Tyehimba is a multidisciplinary artist. Their work is inspired by the glorious traditions of black and queer life. Ajani uses collaging, poetry, photography, and fashion to express their ideas surrounding their life as a queer black male, such as intersectionality and abstraction. Recently, they have just graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a bachelors of Arts in History of Art and Architecture.

Honoring and imagining through creation is a very important part of how they make sense of their purpose in life. Art serves as both a love language and a tool of advocacy for Ajani, acting as both a shield and a sword to pierce and combat negative stigmas that surround queer and black life. Their practice is the continual action of choosing to love oneself through visual and literary expressions.

Their work explores themes such as urbanism, community, internal expression, nostalgia, love, erotism, marginalization, joy, and radicalism. Piqued by the intersection that is queerness and blackness, their works aim to weave together both understanding and community through their practice.”

Thank you, Ajani!!!!!
