To Be a Conscious Mother

To be a mother is not just a role but a sacred spiritual transformation and responsibility.

To be entrusted with creating new life for this world is no small task and deserves more reverence and respect.

Becoming a mother is a sacrifice of who we were and becomes a portal to something new that’s being born, and it not just our child.

‘Becoming a mother leaves no woman as it found her. It unravels and rebuilds her. It cracks her open, takes her to her edges. It’s both beautiful and brutal, often at the same time’. Nikki McCahon

This means we need to be intentional about stepping into being who you have never been before. A mother is becoming something new so we need community, and being seen, as well as resources, rituals and ceremony.

My landscape of motherhood is a garden where I have a balance of flowers that make me whole. The medicine is my strength is similar to herbs, the flowers that bring me joy, and the soil that nourishes me.

I’m honoured to be the lavender for mothers as they become initiated into their motherhood journey.

I didn’t have the village of elders guiding me, so I turned to books. I’m realizing that my abundance of books and my lived experience have really shaped the way for me to become more conscious in my motherhood.

This has given me a clear path and agency.

I could call this post: She didn’t know what to do so she read about it and became.

Here are just some of my many books - recent ones I’m reading right now, some classics I have found over the years as well as some of my most favourite ones that I recommend over and over again.

What is your landscape in motherhood – is it a forest, a desert, the ocean?

I am happy sighing as I adore being a May baby. 🥰

I am smiling softly now as it’s also true that, for a variety of reasons, this month can hold a lot of tenderness and grief for me.

Over the years, I’ve learned to select my traveling companions through this month with great care. Here are the ones I’ve chosen (or did they choose me?) for this time around.

It was my joy to discover that Island Mother from her Landscape of Mothers' "The Inner Mother Deck" by @jilldoneen begins her season today. Such an amazingly Graced and perfect guardian for me as legacy is so very important to me.

I started "When the Ache Remains" by @_lisaolivera this morning and, just as I hoped it might, her just released book is already meeting me beautifully well.

I’ve had "Take What You Need" by @aundikolber for a while now and have been slowly savoring it along the way which I look forward to continuing.

All are welcomed ways of Attending my dear self, all under the gentle, sheltering eyes of Grace, my angels, and my ancestors.

Blessed be.

Women’s Grief Ritual
About a moon ago, over 30 women entered the depths of our grief, rage and heartbreak together. The beauty, power, healing, and connection that was birthed through the willingness to say “yes” to the places where we have turned away was so profound. The reclamation of parts of our souls, the womb healing, the surprising ancestral connection, the embodied wisdom earned through going into the dark, the trustability of our feminine fury, the joyful remembrance of the divine feminine pouring into our lives especially when we are together …. Are some of the gems that were revealed.

Thank you sisters for going there! What a big beauty offering to the places that need it and the greater web of life.

It is so clear how it is all connected. As within, as without. Our pain and unprocessed grief and that which has yet to be touched by LOVE and presence is so deeply connected to all that is unfolding in our lives, and in the world. May we remember how to tend to the inner sanctum with wisdom, deep care and with each other. We cannot do this alone.

May the ripple of this sacred work continue to nourish the unseen but felt relations with the land, our ancestors and our connection with Spirit.

Thank you San Lorenzo River, Mama Ocean, the big Bays, Redwoods & Oaks holding the space and helping us remember how to root down, remember our strength, release that which is too much to carry and be held by that which is larger than our outdated ways.

Thank you to the Broken Open team for your devotion, service and heart! @yoniversemonologues, @drjanehansen , @sarahsongbirdmusic @jilldoneen, @grace.sacredfire , @erinkammererhen

We are envisioning another all women’s grief ritual in late summer, and will be opening the Broken Open Altar every moon for the next 6 months for women who have experienced the multi-day grief ritual with us— so we may regularly renew ourselves by collectively grieving, emptying out and breaking open to our vital heart power again, and again through it all.
Please let me know if you would like to be added to our mailing list.

A few days before her feast day, I was browsing for some green fabric for Brigid to bless. I am smiling big as I fell in love with this gorgeous hunter green print the moment I laid eyes on it.

As part of @jilldoneen’s launch team for her beautiful The Inner Mother Deck, I received a partially completed God’s eye. I was instantly charmed by the twig arms and the oranges and reds Jill had used. A big smile spread when it occurred to me that I could finish mine with strips of my now Brigid blessed cloth.

And so that’s what I did!

Blessed be.

I am over the Moon delighted to share that @jilldoneen beautiful, The Inner Mother Deck, has been released - yay!!

As a beta tester, it is my great honor to be a member of a small group that is spending a month with her, helping to “ground these cards and this [good and healing] work in the soil/soul of the world.”

Our first invitation arrived this week… to create a vignette, a space to hold our cards, a place where we could spend time getting to know them.

….

I was originally going to wait until we had taken our Christmas tree down so I could place it on the wooden heart table here next to my chair.

And then, a wonderful idea blossomed… what if I placed it on top of my beloved grandmother’s desk, allowing her to help hold me in this beautiful (ongoing) reclaiming and strengthening of my internal mother?

The swaddle underneath is intended to remind me of my favorite Mary, our Lady of Guadalupe. The 2 framed pictures of the sweet girls hold significance for me as do the mother and daughter embracing (I see you, Attend 🥰) and the ceramic girl that I painted when I was about 10-years old.

The angel with her skirts billowing and offering the blessing “Wishing you Love and peace” remind me of Wind Mother. The wooden bird, heart, and Mary on her donkey remind me of Forest Mother. The shell reminds me of Ocean Mother and the candle is a wink from Sun and Moon Mother.

My precious blue butterfly on top of Jill’s gorgeous book was a gift from my beloved mother. It remains such a welcomed reminder that, yes, indeed, my dear girl, given enough time, miracles can and do happen.

Blessed be.

Settle into the safe haven of the Cave of your heart, child, and as you do, welcome your howling, Orphaned Instincts home.

What is the dream that is calling to you? If there were no caveats or restrictions or naysayers (internal or external), what is it that you would most love (and ache?) to do with, as Mary Oliver says, your “one wild and precious life”?

Wait.

You do know that I planted the gift of your instincts and dreams and imaginings deep within you, right? And that my plans (Will) are indeed intended to give you hope and a future? Yes, sweet soul, my plans are designed to prosper you and not to harm you in any way.

I am smiling tenderly your way with a soft sigh as I know this process of allowing your dreams to (finally?) unfold can hold a lot of feelings, including deep grief.

All that to say that I and my Holy Helpers are all right here beside you every single step of the way as you practice leaning into trust. Allow my/our presence to Attend and to Nourish you as you do.

As you explore letting the dreams you imagine take flight, *always* in your own time and pace (I know it can take some time sometimes and I’ve planned for this, too), you may just be surprised with delight by their great heights.

I am always here, darlin’ daughter of mine. And we are always, *always* connected.

Blessed be.

Unspelling & Weaving a New Dream

On the potent portal of Samhain (Halloween) when the veils are thinnest to the spirit world and the ancestors… and in the last hours of the waning Wise Woman moon (healer/“witch”) we made our sincere and humble offerings to support the web of life at this crucial political crossroads happening today and the times to come.
We were all called to tend to this great imbalance through ritual theatre.

The guardians opened the circle and laid down the spiral structure with the sounds of Digeridoo and drums, and offerings of oyster shells and marigolds; so the women could bring the incantation for unspelling (releasing) what is not serving life i.e. patriarchy, greed, manipulation, war consciousness, racism, misogyny and be vessels to weave a new dream of beauty, balance, and coherence into creation.

It was a beautiful dream realized to come together in this way and have community support in enacting this embodied prayer.
This is clearly just the beginning of what will be needed for this monumental time on our planet.

May the results of this election somehow, someway seed our path forward with Truth and integrity so a new vision guided by wisdom, compassion and integration of our collective shadow may be born.
🇺🇸🖤🌌

*Thank you all who participated, weaving together your gifts of song, vision, organization, nourishment, musicianship and sensitivity to make this possible. Thank you to the community that came out witness and amplify the prayer.
Thank you Evelyn @handinhandhenna for your artistry and support with the belly/womb painting. So much fun!
📷Thank you Deven Raut, Chelsea Marie, Tess Howell, and my babe Ethan for capturing this for us.

During this annual August Leo season, when the Sun, the planetary ruler of Leo, is at its height of strength and power, I just want to celebrate the magnificent persistence of this sign. Leo is known as "fixed fire." In astrology, "fixed" is a designation that means consistent, loyal, and persevering. And "fire" is passionate, intuitive, and bright. When you put those two together in Leo, you get someone who is a radiant, creative, force like the Sun, generously shining their light on others. The Leo loyalty is unwavering. And like the Sun that rises day after day, Leo energy is constant and enduring.

In a session yesterday with Jill Clifton, author of "Landscape of Mothers" and founder of the Landscape of Mothers movement (@jilldoneen on Instagram), we were talking about Leo. She happens to have 3 out of 5 personal planets in Leo. (That's a lot!) First, we were talking about her dominant natal Saturn, and in the midst of that she said, "But that's why God gave me 3 planets in Leo! I'm serious! The curiosity and the creativity - for me those two things are very close together - and the persistence. The Sun comes up EVERY DAY. All of that is the (Leo) stuff that kept me going. There were definitely low points when I could've just sunk into the Underworld."

And that made me want to share Jill's message with you. During this Leo Season, tap into the persistence and creativity of our current Leo environment. Be persistent in your desires. Be persistent in your creativity. Generate what you need from the fire within. Be like the sun and ALWAYS RISE to whatever the situation demands. The Sun rules Leo, and Leo rules the heart! Trust your heart. Shine from it. The truth is, you've got this!

(Like Elizabeth Barrett Browning, who said "My sun sets to rise again!)

I know what’s it's like when your kids are getting to that age where you don’t have as much influence as you once did. You see them spending more and more time on on their phones and computers and you are witnessing the harmful impacts on their mental health and personal development. Yet when you impose strict limits you can feel how it harms the relationship to be in a power struggle with them.

Nothing is more important than your relationship with your kids. You want them to come to you with any problem so that you can protect and care for them always. Yet, technology use battles and strict limits are causing your kids to start avoiding you or become sneaky and dishonest. They want to be making their own decisions about their time, and you want them to. After all, you won’t always be there to monitor their self care and manage their time. You are ready for the power struggle to end because…

Your time matters.

It’s exhausting to be managing them and managing yourself and it comes at the cost of your own mental and emotional capacity for self-development and creativity.

So how can you empower them to make healthy decisions around technology use?
How can you ensure that they are developing into autonomous adults with the critical thinking and self control required to meet grown up responsibilities? How can you nurture a safe, loving and trusting relationship with them into adulthood? How can you trust they are on a path to autonomy so that you can begin to experience the personal freedom that is the promise of their adulthood?

I'm collaborating with a dear friend and author of the book Landscape Of Mothers to offer a 6 week group coaching program for conscious parents of teens to support you through relationship building strategeis to trust your kids healthy habits with technology and claim your emotional energy for your own creativity, joy and self-development.
