A week ago today we lost this legend, @jillgirling. I’ve known Jill since I was a literal child. Our families were good friends. We spent countless holidays together where she’d never fail to show up with some cool friend and tell incredible stories that blew my young mind: about her travels to Asia; or shit she and her siblings got up to as kids; or her adventures in the film industry. She was the epitome of cool girl: vibrant, interesting, curious, passionate, generous. Never not Jill.

When I moved downtown after high school, we lived close to each other in Little Italy. She had an amazing loft on College St that she dubbed ‘The Hamptons - and, if you worked in the film industry in Toronto between the early aughts and 2013, chances are you went to a wrap party there. She hosted my 30th birthday - saving me from bad decisions at 1AM when I tried to open a warm bottle of Veuve and she was like, “No. I’m not gonna let you do this.”

When I started my career as a TV writer, she was transitioning out of AD’ing and into writing & producing. Launching our careers at the same time we got to cheer each other on, read each other’s scripts, share advice and commiserate as we both struggled to get our breaks…

What a joy it was to watch her crush that dream, become a Showrunner, make beautiful television and move to Paris where she found her Prince Charming in the wonderful Bash. What a life lesson in manifesting your destiny.

When I introduced Jason to my parents, she was there as a buffer as my Dad gave Jason the gears (alongside a slightly less helpful Kevi). When we got married, she was a part of our ceremony and stood alongside us on the beach. When I moved to New York, she and Joey came to visit. When I moved to LA she made sure to introduce me to all her friends, supporting me however she could. Always signing off every call, email or interaction with some version of ‘love ya man’.

How lucky am I that I got to have a relationship with her through so many chapters of our lives. How lucky am I that I got to be adult friends with the ‘cool girl’ I’ve idolized forever. How lucky am I to have been her friend. (See comments to read the rest)

Dear Jill, I thought this grief would show up differently. As a need to be with people, mostly, filling the void you leave. But I’m okay with that void, it is as large as your presence and as beautiful as your soul. It is creative, it is emotional, it is spiritual. It is how I continue to speak to you.
Good Grief, Girling. Good Grief.

@nectarwoode‘s healing lyrics came at a perfect timing 🕯️
