Jimmy Rix ‘Domestic and Feral’ opens Saturday 14 November 11am to 5pm, 35 Derby Street, Collingwood, Melbourne. You are warmly invited ✨
.
“Most of these works have been made during the COVID period where I have spent more time
observing animals, both domestic and feral. My studio in the Macedon Ranges looks out to a large dam and native grass area. There are a pair of Welcome Swallows and a Nankeen Kestrel who roost in my workshop at night and often sit and watch me work.
I have always had an interest in the aboriginal history of our continent. Since I have lived in The Ranges, I have read about the creation stories and the importance of the birdlife to this area. I have tried to connect with Country by observing birds.
.
I have a love of all animals and the domestic animals in this exhibition are of our own pets, as well as pets I have encountered in the past. I like to sketch, making a lot of small images on a page. These become my sculpture. With this show I have gone from drawing into fabrication very quickly as I wanted to be in the moment; you could say that I stayed in “the flow”.
.
Often something gets entombed inside the sculpture during the making and can be heard when one shakes the work. Other times I like to place objects inside sculptures, I believe this give the work a soul.
.
I find surface finishes interesting and the alchemy of electroplating fascinating. This is the process of bonding a metal to the surface of another metal object by an electrical charge. I patina all these works and the bronze sculptures myself and control the rusting process on the Corten pieces.’

•ONLINE EXHIBITION• Jimmy Rix has several sculptures featured in our online exhibition ‘Figuration’, including this exquisite piece, ‘Defender’.
.
We are delighted that Jimmy is having a solo exhibition in our Melbourne gallery very soon. Watch this space for dates and details! ✨
.
‘Figuration’ presents a rich collection of sculptural work that reflects and responds to the physical world. While the artworks in this exhibition essentially draw inspiration from human forms, each artist explores this theme through their own unique perception and visual language. This group exhibition features a vast selection of works in steel, bronze, copper, aluminium, ceramic, wood, porcelain and mixed media. From masterfully observed anatomical contours, too creatures symbolic, mythological and allegorical; all these diverse pieces explore three dimensional forms both real and imagined.

My sculpture on its way to its new home in Forbes NSW. It is nice to see it finally go after Covid lockdown and organizing overheight permits. In a couple of weeks I will take another piece with me and assemble the entire sculpture onsite.

@jimmyrix‘s monumental sculpture ‘Road Kill!’ measures an incredible 18 metres in length and is soon to be installed in Forbes, NSW. Watch this space for images and details of this exciting installation!
.
Jimmy Rix’s sculptures often relate to personal experiences and familiar objects. Having lived within both natural and farmed Australian landscapes throughout his life, rebellious kangaroos, machine-horse hybrids, playful sheep and utilitarian objects have inevitably been cast as the actors of his narrative-based works. In these sculptures a sense of humour, an engagement with Australiana, an interest in scale and a concern for the environment are often the underlying themes and inspiration.

TALKING WITH SCULPTURE
Friend of the @shac_robertson @davidball333 took up the challenge and, on a whim, and with just a few short weeks of notice pulled together this pop-up exhibition with steel, sticks and stones. Brilliant crafting has realised a kaleidoscope of thoughts by some of Australia’s most celebrated sculptors. This is a rare find in a small regional show.

Sculptors: Suzie Bleach and Andy Townsend, Wapengo Sapphire Coast; Michael Purdy, Brogers Creek via Berry; Mike MacGregor, Bungendore; Jimmy Rix, Malmsbury, Victoria; Bronwyn Berman, Burrawang; David Ball, Wildes Meadow; Lucinda McDonald, Moss Vale and Britta Stenmanns, Moss Vale

An online catalogue is available on The SHAC website.

Exhibition Dates: Friday 3 January 2020 until Monday 17 February 2020.
