POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Can’t think of anything spookier than seeing the landscapes in Bears Ears and Grand Staircase that are no longer protected and now under threat. 😭

Every landscape pictured has been removed from the monument boundaries. (Ironically, except that rock I’m face down on.)

Our public lands belong in public hands.
Public lands hold our future, present, and past.
They are not for sale.
And we must not let them be sold out.

Let’s just look at the numbers folks, the communities out West have spoken loud and clear about how we feel:

🔶 91% of Western voters say existing national monument designations should be left in place.

🔶 74% of Western voters oppose selling some national public lands for oil and gas development.

Our public lands are our common ground—and they are not for sale. Join me and @wildernesssociety in telling the Department of Interior: Public lands are not for sale!

📍 snapshots from my favorite work trip of all time.

After two summers spent fighting to protect Utah’s national monuments with my colleagues at @wildernesssociety, wrapping this season by taking creators down to visit these landscapes and witness ‘em with our own eyes was the most joyous and heartbreaking gift.

To hear about these places and why they matter is one thing—but to go down there, and BE amongst the rocks and the birds and the wildflowers and the lizards and the cryptobiotic soil, it’s a different type of impact. I would do anything for this land.

I’ve been to all these places before, but coming back through the lens of seeing these once-protected places now removed from monument boundaries was a new gut punch.

While planning this trip, I had to toil over before/after boundary maps, because the TWS team sent us to specifically visit places that were no longer protected.

Turns out, nearly every single one of my ‘saved pins’ collection of places I’ve camped, loved to hike, wanted to visit again—were all now outside of protected boundaries.

This trip was easy to organize, because all of these places I love are under attack. 🫠

Y’all I am so tired, I am so so so so so tired—and I know that everyone else is too. But after witnessing what’s at stake, remembering why I fight for these places, and filling my soul + belly up with other humans who care—I’m more committed to this advocacy than ever.

More to come from this trip, I haven’t even shared the stories from getting to send creators into a tiny airplane over Bears Ears yet!

Thank you, Boulder! We're still reveling in the magic of last weekend's Open House.

You didn't just show up. You stayed, danced, and met new neighbors.

Morning asanas with @herbal_magik. A couch-side conversation with Kunlong Von Cousin, @jitterbug_art, and @bodyenroute on who gets to define wellness, belonging, and leadership in the outdoors. @notlostjustdiscovering rethinking the lone hero's journey in adventure film. @artbyshido painting portals on your clothes. @DAGHE on the decks.

The best part happened in between: chairs pulled into circles, phone numbers traded, strangers learning carrom from strangers, conversations that refused to end when the session did.

Celebrating Global Majority artists and adventurers, gathering IRL on Pearl Street. This is what we're building.

Deep gratitude to the supporters and community partners who made this Open House a reality: the Project Junglee Groundbreakers, @mountainmediaartscollective, @negusinnature, @afuera_productions @ourcreaturecomforts, and @skratchlabs; and our volunteers Nupur, Michelle and Laura.

“The sheer volume of mining claims filed (72) so far in the land cut from Bears Ears National Monument should dispel any lingering illusion about the administration’s true aim,” said Charlie Luke, Utah State Director for The Wilderness Society. “The president and the Utah delegation, led by Senator Lee, would sacrifice irreplaceable cultural resources, wildlife habitat, clean air and water, and our freedom to experience this magnificent place for the short-term profit of a few. We owe future generations a Bears Ears that remains healthy, intact and conserved.” Thanks to Light Hawk for flying us over the areas previously protected from mining under monument status and for Chaitna and Kaya from Grand Canyon Trust for joining me on the ground later in the trip.

Earlier this week I explored some of the vast areas recently removed from Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument with some amazing wilderness advocates. Unbelievable that the current administration deems these places to be unworthy of monument designation. The history and legacy of these places are far more valuable than what can be extracted beneath the surface for short term financial gain.

Having an independent media + storytelling space called @compost_cotton_cornrows where it’s my responsibility AND HONOR to anchor the kaleidoscope of LOVE , power, beauty + brilliance of Black and Afro Indigenous vanguards in sustainability … I’m just in awe of us!

I see the world and our stories as a collage. And the healing of community and planet is this textured quilt of life affirming acts of regeneration.

I was just reflecting on getting to share this thinking in my bro Mike’s independent media company @thisisumber! I’m always reminded of how critical it is for us to support independent media, protect and invest in archivist, celebrate artists and culture bearers and continue to build space for cultural preservation and knowledge. @thisismikenicholls is a true visionary & artist and I’m always so proud of his integrity and alignment for authentic connection!

This is and will always be my North Star of sustainability.
As always S/O Oakland!

Join expert guest speakers and artists for a conversation about how visual media and art can inform our activism for the ocean. How can we use art to deepen connection to the ocean and to the aquatic environment from anywhere in the world? So much of the oceans’ depths are out of sight. In what ways can art tell the story of the deep sea, its inhabitants, and how we as communities near and far can interact with the ocean in a supportive way?

We’re excited for this panel presentation with insights from Gillian Duenas @gilli.art, Latasha Greene @jitterbug_art, Sarah Winter Whalen @healthyoceancoalition, and Inland Ocean Ambassador Natalie Becker

Be part of the conversation and learn how you can lead in your community with ocean and eco art!

Apply TODAY via link in bio & story.

And head to our website inlandoceancoalition.org/inland-ocean-ambassadors to learn more about different topics we are covering this season.

What a special greet that brought folks together from around the world. Vikram is from Mexico by way of the UK and is on his final leg of his 30-day exploration of the US via Amtrak. @zita.jnw is a veterinarian student from Germany who is traveling the US for a few extra weeks following her brief studies in upstate NY. And Phil and Greg are retirees joining us from Boulder, CO who helped share amazing Colorado history with the group.

Phil even spotted a male 10-lined June beetle (aka watermelon beetle). I guess our mural selection for our group photo was a bit foreshadowing. 🇲🇽🇬🇧🇩🇪🇺🇸 🦏🍉🪲
