Here to Stay: El Arte del Inmigrante

For the second year, Here to Stay: El Arte del Inmigrante returned to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center as part of Welcoming Week, bringing immigrant stories, experiences, and creative voices into one of the city’s most visible civic spaces.

Presented by @vozes.expresion in collaboration with the @cltgov and @welcomingusa, supported by the Creative Growth Grant, Here to Stay is more than the title of an exhibition. It is a statement of presence, belonging, and permanence.

It recognizes that immigrants are not simply passing through our communities—they are building lives, raising families, creating art, preserving memories, and actively shaping Charlotte’s cultural identity.

Through themes of journey, memory, place, identity, family, and belonging, the exhibition creates space for immigrant artists to tell their own stories and invites the broader community to see migration not only through the experience of leaving somewhere behind, but through the profound act of making somewhere new a home.

Attending the Show: Die Schönheit der Couture

Location: 128 S Tryon St.

- This is was such an intimate and unique showcase of couture designs and handmade art. I got to support fashion friends and watch new and established designers light up as their work graced the runway.

- Highlight of the night is meeting so many wonderful people including the amazing Gratzia Walker (I hope I spelled that right) - a fashion icon with FABULOUS bedazzled boots that called me over to her when I walked in.
She is such a sweet and loving soul, I am so blessed to have gotten to share the night with such a powerful woman.
She is a WW2 refugee smuggler who helped her dad transport those in need from Italy under Mussolini’s law. We got to bond throughout the night and we shared tears, laughs and ooos and awws as the show began.

A partir del 10 de septiembre, el lobby del Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center reunirá las obras de 16 artistas que exploran la migración como experiencia vital: aquello que dejamos, lo que llevamos con nosotros y las nuevas formas de identidad y pertenencia que construimos.

Presentada como parte de las celebraciones de Welcoming Week de la Ciudad de Charlotte, la exposición invita a acercarnos a estas historias desde el arte y a reconocer los vínculos que nos unen en el corazón de nuestra ciudad.
