For decades, people told women distance running was too much for us.

After the 1928 Olympics, the women’s 800m was dropped because officials said it was too exhausting. It wasn't brought back until 1960. In 1967, Kathrine Switzer registered as “K.V. Switzer” to be able to run the Boston Marathon. And it wasn’t until 1984 that women were finally allowed to run the Olympic marathon.

On August 5, 1984, in Los Angeles, Joan Benoit sped up on mile 3 and ran most of the race alone. Before entering the tunnel to the stadium, she told herself her life would never be the same on the other side.

She crossed the line in 2:24:52. The first women’s Olympic marathon champion in history. 🥇

42 years later, I got to meet her in a shake out run Boston.

She was right. Her life was never the same. Neither was mine.

💡 TIP: Never miss the Nike shakeout runs! They always invite running legends. 👟

Chicago, you were something special. 🩵❤️

This weekend was exactly what we imagined when we set out to do big things to celebrate runners. The connections we made, the stories we heard, and seeing the joy our art brought to the running community made it all worth it.

A few highlights we won’t forget:

⭐️ Cheering & seeing runners recognize our hot dog sign at miles 22 & 24
⭐️ Watching marathon legends Deena Kastor and Joan Benoit Samuelson sign our Chicago map print for runners was an absolute pinch-me moment.
⭐️ Our first-ever Chicago collection was also a huge hit! We sold out of all our 8x10 prints and Skyline mini prints and we’re now personalizing orders for everyone who selected that option. As a little thank-you for all the support, we’re including a FREE sticker in every order. ❤️
⭐️ We still have some mini-prints back in stock, so if you’re looking a keepsake or gift to remember your race by, don’t wait!

This is why we do what we do: celebrating the culture, community, and memories that make running so much more than a sport.

Chicago, thank you for being part of it. 🫶

NYC, you’re next...more coming soon!

What race should we celebrate next? Drop your suggestions in the comments!

Oh my goodness, thank you so much Chicago. Thank you all for every kind message, every cheer out there, and for carrying me all the way to the finish.

Thank you Andrew for making sure I was prepared and confident and leaving the marathon more excited than I was before.

Thank you @calebjkerr for doing literally all of the thinking for 20 miles. I know we anticipated being able to work in more of a pack so doing all of the thinking and all of the work… I know that’s not easy and you made it look effortless.

Thank you to all of my family and Matthew who made the journey. Matthew was the loudest individual out there, and I’m not sure anyone else’s family managed to get an entire bridge worth of people chanting.

Thank you to the entire @chimarathon and all of the volunteers! Because of you all’s hard work, I’m able to chase my dreams! Looking out over the start/finish area while I was eating breakfast and seeing hundreds of volunteers heading out was so inspiring, and I’m so grateful.

I came away feeling both thrilled and hungry to come back and see what more is there. But if the marathon is about who had the most fun… I think I won.🤭

Chicago marathon weekend dump…

Somewhere between the miles, the hugs, the laughs, and the wait…do I actually belong here? moments, I was reminded why this community means so much to me. A huge thank you to Team Abbott for creating space for runners like me.

Imposter syndrome is still something I navigate.

Sometimes I look around at the incredible people in these spaces and wonder if I really belong. But every time I’m with my Team Abbott family, I’m reminded that I do. Not because I have everything figured out, not because my journey looks like everyone else’s, but because I belong here, too.

Shoutout to @nevschulman for being an inspiration and to my Abbott teammates for reminding me, over and over again, that we are so much more than our diagnoses. We are athletes. We are stories still being written. We are people chasing big dreams in bodies and circumstances that don’t always make it easy. And we deserve to take up space, too!

Seven Majors later, I thought I’d have this whole belonging thing figured out by now. Plot twist: still working on it.

But weekends like this remind me that sometimes you don’t need to prove you belong. You just need people who remind you that you already do.

The medals are cool. The miles are cool. But finding your people? THAT’S the real flex.

Forever grateful for this not so little corner of the running world. Abbott family, y’all are something special. 💙🤍

I contributed absolutely nothing to their success, but am happy to be in a photo surrounded by historic Olympic medalists and running legends for the Abbott 5k in Chicago!

Joking aside, super cool moment to see Joan Benoit Samuelson (first women’s Olympic marathon champ), Deena Kastor(Olympic marathon bronze medalist) and Carrie Tollefson (Olympian and U.S. Olympic Trials champ)

S/O to @aliontherun1 and @marywruns in the pic as well
