Sometimes I visit a place that stays with me long after I leave. Lake Atitlán is one of them.

I first visited this area more than 20 years ago, but haven’t been back since. So after an incredible week serving alongside the Free to Smile team at Village of Hope, we drove about three hours from Guatemala City to spend our last couple of days here.

If you’ve never heard of it, the lake sits more than 5,000 feet up in the highlands. It fills a giant caldera left by a volcanic eruption and it’s the deepest lake in Central America, over 1,000 feet in places. Three volcanoes guard the shoreline: San Pedro, Tolimán and Atitlán. Small Mayan villages are tucked in all around the water. It’s been referred to as the Lake Como of Central America.

Not only was it beautiful, but it was restful. The infinity pool overlooking the lake, the naps on the balcony during thunderstorms and dinner with my girls. It was the perfect end to our week.

We’ve spent this week at a place called the Village of Hope. It’s a little sanctuary tucked in the mountains, about halfway between Guatemala City and Antigua, and it’s home to kids who have been through things no child should ever go through.

Here they get safe shelter, nutritious food, an education and a stable relational environment. That’s what actually heals.

@studio8e8 is here documenting the story of the @freetosmilefoundation dental team as they care for these kids. I’ve done a lot of these trips, but this one is different because we got to bring our daughter along for her first mission. And of course they put her to work. Watching her step in and do dental assisting was one of those moments I won’t forget.

Proof that dentistry pairs pretty well with a great glass of wine 🥂

Dentistry Uncorked: A Study in Taste brought together incredible wines, delicious pairings, and some of our favorite people in the dental community for a night to remember at Stories on High.

Our Founder and CEO, Joshua Scott, joined fellow registered sommelier and “Winegentist” Katrina Sanders to guide guests through an evening of tasting, learning, laughing, and connecting.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to the Ohio Dental Association for partnering with us to make this experience possible.

And a huge thank you to our sponsors TransitionOne, Huntington Bank Practice Finance, and Mango Voice for helping us bring Dentistry Uncorked to life. 🥂

Last week we did something we’ve never done before at Studio 8E8.

Our entire executive team came into town, and we holed up in a hotel in downtown Columbus for our first ever initiatives retreat. No client calls (well... almost), no inbox, no team meetings. Just one big question: what does 2027 need from us?

To be very honest, stepping away from the day to day to set aside a couple days to “talk” is hard. There’s never a good time to do it. I have learned that the work doesn’t pause because you decided to go think about the future.

But somewhere in the middle of day one, I think we all realized how much we needed this. Time to actually process the year we’re in. Time to talk about the brutal facts, not just the relentless optimism. Time to talk about where we want to be standing at the end of next year, and which initiatives deserve our time, energy, and resources to get us there.

So, if you lead a team and you keep telling yourself you’ll find time to step back and plan... you won’t. You just have to make it happen.

A few days well spent at the ODA Annual Session!

Our CEO, Josh, took the stage to share the importance of telling your story and we had a blast connecting with dentists, practice owners, and friends from across the dental community—all in our home state of Ohio.

Thanks for having us, ODA!

O🔺H🔺I🔺O

We are back home and so excited to join you all for the @ohiodentalassoc annual session this week…and I seriously can’t wait.

I have an incredible schedule of all of my favorite things: implant content, geeking out on all things perio, doing a free book signing of my newest book with @designs4vision …and sipping wine with my bestie @joshuascott of @studio8e8 alongside his gorgeous wife @joannafscott.

Finally, the Ohio Dental Association made sure we were able to take baby Lincoln to his very first [THE] Ohio State 🏈 game. How amazing!

Will I hug you in Ohio?! Come find me!

@joannafscott and I spent one afternoon in Rome. I know, it’s not enough time, but you have to pick and choose where you spend your time in Italy. Claude gave us a Rome-in-four-hours walking tour and we knocked it out in 98 degree heat and included a stop for Campari Spritz. No history or notes here because… there’s so much… like, where to start?

August’s camera roll looked a little something like this. 📷

This month was jam packed with flights, photoshoots, team meetings, rollercoasters, and plenty of moments in between.

Here’s a small glimpse at what life looks like behind the scenes at Studio 8E8.

PS. Don’t miss the last slide 🪄
