The second episode of the Social Lives of Shoes by the Footwear Research Network is now live! Many thanks to the incredible artist Jo Cope @jocope_studio for her profound insights

In this episode, we explore the power of shoes as vessels for storytelling and social change. From Jo’s collaborative project with @sheltercharity addressing homelessness to her evocative, twisted stilettos that embody feminist struggles, she reveals how craft and performance art can generate empathy and drive meaningful dialogue.

”I suppose it’s always about, you know, wouldn’t we love to change the world, through the power of shoes?”

We discuss her therapeutic making process, the political power of red shoes, and how footwear can connect communities through shared experience. Jo also shares insights from teaching ethical social practice at @dmuleicester and her current reflections on using art to navigate our challenging political climate - all through the humble yet profound medium of shoes.

We hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we enjoyed recording it!

Happy Christmas from all of us at WORD!

This was our last event of the year - on Tuesday at Leicester Central Library - launching our just published @greenroomgardeners cookbook of recipes, poetry and art. The book is absolutely phenomenal - and we’re thrilled to say it will be featured by @goodfoodguideuk in 2026 (!)

A massive thanks to them, to @leicesterlibraries for hosting and supporting this gorgeous launch, to @dianadaviesart for her brilliant supporting ceramics session (poetry/pottery!) - to everyone who was able to make it along - and most of all to @brightsparksarts and the talented and inspiring @greenroomgardeners behind this book.

We’ve just sold out of our first print run - but never fear - more copies will be on the way today. If you’d like to purchase one or more - we can still post them out in time for Christmas.

If you’re in Leicester, we can drop them to you (Santa-stylee) or leave them at one of our venues for you to pick up.

Copies are just £12 each - and all proceeds will go to supporting the work of @greenroomgardeners with young people experiencing homelessness, and across mental health communities.

We’d really love you to have a copy - so do DM or email hello@wordpoetry.uk if you’d like that too!

Happy Christmas once again - and thanks for reading, watching and being part of WORD! and what we do in 2025.
