DREAMLIKE IMAGE // https://reliquaryv.bandcamp.com/track/dreamlike-image

A holographic transmission from the land of shadows, Dreamlike Image is a letter written in the void of the darkest night. This gestural and surreal track layers gritty, ethereal textures with a darkly hypnotic sung-spoken lyricism that is alternately entrancing and unnerving. Plucked from Reliquary V’s setlist in recent live shows combining heavily processed samples, synths, and hissing vocal interludes, Dreamlike Image tracks the latest evolution of their dark experimental poetics, rippling through temporo-spatial dimensions of no wave, industrial, and gothic rock.

Lyrically, it describes astral travel into a mysterious night sector ruled by the piercing light of the moon, where we receive visitations from the dead and lose ourselves in infinite watery reflections in the calm dark current of an underground river. Blurring the realm of sleep and the quiet of the tomb, Dreamlike Image traverses damaged sonic landscapes, pulled by the ancient undertow of dreams.

If you've been to our shows, you might have heard us talk about this, but we wanted to take a moment to explain the meaning behind "milieu therapy."

Germany after the First World War was facing a suicide epidemic, an epidemic of despair. One doctor, Magnus Hirschfeld, himself a gay man, took note that many of his patients spoke of suicide in the context of being gay/trans, and he decided that if the Hippocratic Oath he swore as a doctor bound him to protect life, then it obligated him to make life worth living, at all costs. He founded the Institute for Sexual Research in 1919, which conducted some of the first gender-affirming surgeries in the West, when other doctors refused to do them. And when his patients came to him full of despair because of the way the world treated them, he frequently prescribed "milieu therapy"-- simply, to be in community with other gay and trans people, in the drag bars and cabarets of Weimar Berlin. What he was saying was that there was nothing wrong with his patients; they just needed to be around people who accepted and loved them.

It's notable that almost the first thing the Nazis did when they took power was to burn the library of the Institute. The photo we've all seen of the book burning is that: the destruction of thousands of pages of research on sex and gender, which set the field of gender affirming care back by decades.

Jack had been booking DIY shows for almost a decade under their own name, and when Turbo Haus offered a space to do a free monthly show in 2024, they needed a name. Milieu Therapy was born out of a desire to see more queer and trans artists on stage, and to make a space for queer and trans people to be in community. Wherever our shows happen, that's the intent. Especially now, when queer and trans people are again being scapegoated for all kinds of societal ills that we did not cause, making spaces where we can be safe and loved, where we can share in the catharsis of live music and expression, is a potent medicine. We invite you to share it with us.

Mission statement 2/3

Even with a penchant for all things pain, pleasure, and self-expression, I still find it interesting to think how well making clean holes in leather lends to making clean holes in you.
