To find and photograph musk oxen—the idea existed in my mind from the moment I knew I’d be sailing in Greenland. The terrain there, like in much of the Arctic, feels inconsistent underfoot. Sometimes you sink into soft moss or mud, and sometimes hard rock presents as the surface. Sometimes you get purchase on the ground, and at other times you slip. Steepness varies as well. No one moves as quickly as they might elsewhere. We suspected that musk oxen might be up high somewhere on this island, but we had not seen any yet, here or elsewhere. Not far into the climb, we saw them at great distance, but they headed around a rock formation. Nonetheless we continued up. We wanted to get the views from the top even if we could never catch up with the musk oxen. It surprised me when we saw them again, this time close enough to photograph, almost as though they had stopped moving immediately after we’d lost sight of them the first time. They grazed on some of the mosses, lichens, and grasses, unbothered by our nearer re-appearance. We waited, ready with our heaviest and longest lenses, silent and still, for the moment when one of the animals might look toward us or position itself at a good angle. With wildlife, I struggle with the fact that I never control the situation—I exist on the animals’ timeline and cannot give any direction on how I would like them to position their bodies. But with patience, persistence, and a bit of luck, sometimes I get something I can use. But whether I get the shot or not, it is incredible to see animals like this in the wild, and incredible just to get to a location like this.

Ferðalag út fyrir hið hversdagslega.

Nýverið fór Róbert F. Michelsen í eftirminnilegt 12 daga ferðalag um Grænland um borð í A/S Linden, endurgerðri seglskútu frá 1920 og þeirri stærstu sinnar tegundar í Evrópu.

September 2019 - The Silent Arctic Expedition.

This was my first trip to Scoresby Sund, in Greenland. The first of many trips 😉

We had disposable cameras to shoot whatever we wanted, but I misplaced the camera and thought it was gone for good.
But I found it recently in some old bag, and decided to see what was on it 😁
So here are just the “good” exposures, considering that the film was expired and the lens was made of plastic.

I like them, they bring so many good memories 🤗

Thanks to @thefilmlab.ch for the quick development!

Every tattoo has a story, and these are a few of mine.

Some are reminders to keep the big picture in mind. Some are about choosing a bigger life, protecting your spark, making your own waves, or remembering that our time is limited.

And some are just because birds are cool. 😂

Some views deserve a proper seat. 🥃
A Field bar, couple of campaign chairs, and a worthy backdrop. No rush, no agenda, just good company and a dram.

Tucked into the vast fjord system that is Scoresby Sound, a Danish research station abandoned in the years following WWII still sits, left to the wind and the cold and the slow patience of the Arctic. We went ashore in the zodiac to take a look. Most of the walls still stood, but a few caved in places, and the timber looked soft and grey. Inside, navigating across the parts of the floor that had not collapsed yet, we saw maps pinned to the walls, old radios, and gas cans. Outside, we walked some way up the gradual hill to stretch our legs. From there, drifting past the station and behind our ship, we saw a field of icebergs — enormous and indifferent — slow-moving monuments to so many of the ancient parts of Earth that predate us but are now vanishing on accelerated timelines. Scoresby Sound doesn't ask you to understand these things—it asks only that you stay quiet and listen long enough to notice. I think we did. And then we left aboard @sv__linden to sail a bit closer to the edge of the map.

Had the incredible experience of seeing and capturing the Northern Lights in Greenland. ✨

Standing on the ship and watching them dance across the sky felt almost unreal. A surreal moment , one I know I’ll remember forever 🤍

An absolutely stunning performance by the universe. 💫

If you know me, you know that I am a painfully nostalgic gal, always looking back on where life took me ten hours ago, or ten years ago. But it hits especially hard this week as three years ago today, I completed my first expedition in Eastern Greenland. And a year ago today, I found myself back on a schooner in that same remote part of the world with @greatexped.

I’ll never be able to fully put into words what these expeditions have meant to me, or how much confidence that first trip gave me in my photography career. I remember walking onto that schooner three years ago with the worst case of imposter syndrome that has maybe… ever existed? But I had no idea what that trip would set in motion.

Since then, I’ve had the chance to photograph Western Greenland on a magazine assignment, see my images from these expeditions published and licensed by travel outlets, and, most importantly, develop an ongoing love affair with and deep respect for the Arctic.

I think about Greenland every single day. I wonder if the sound has started to freeze, where the musk ox have migrated, if the polar bear cub we watched has left its mom yet, or if the aurora is on fire tonight.

That first trip was a huge investment in a dream I wasn’t really sure I was qualified to pursue. Looking back, it’s one of the best leaps I’ve ever taken. It has paid me back in ways I never could have imagined—not just professionally, but in experiences, friendships, perspective, and a deep connection to a place I feel incredibly lucky to have known. I’ll always be endlessly grateful for the magic Scoresby Sound has shared with me and every September, I’ll expect to feel this deep nostalgic pull calling me back up North. 🇬🇱
