Some time ago, Joel was on a Citi Bike heading to a major account, carrying six different Champagnes for a tasting. He was riding parallel to a yellow cab when the driver errantly merged into him. Joel went headfirst. The bag went head over heels into traffic. Six bottles. Zero broken. The Champagnes were fine. Joel, a little less so. Eine großartige Woche in New York 🗽 geht zu Ende – eine unvergessliche Woche voll mit erstklassigen Gesprächen, Begegnungen und Weinmomente, die definitiv bleiben. Ein riesiges Dankeschön an @mlykens_ , den großartigen Chef-Einkäufer für deutsche und österreichische Weine und an sein starkes Team Jack Morey ( @story_ofmorey ) und Katja Scharnagl ( @katja_scharnagl ) 🫶. Mit Katja war ich mehrere Tage in New York unterwegs – von Kundenbesuch zu Kundenbesuch, mit vielen guten Gesprächen und ehrlichem Austausch. Ein echtes Highlight war das Weinseminar im Office von @Skurnikwines für Kunden des legendären New Yorker Weinhandels @flatironwines – volle Aufmerksamkeit, spannende Fragen und große Offenheit für deutsche Weine. Ebenso schön war das Wiedersehen mit Lauren Reches ( @the_dr_is_vin ) und Matt Stinton ( @mattstinton ), mit denen uns schon viele Jahre verbinden. 🙏 Mein guter Freund @joel_shot begleitete mich an einem Tag – mit tollen Stopps bei Weinhändlern, Weinbars und Restaurants, unter anderem im großartigen Jean-Georges. Und danke an Paul Grieco ( @spitpaul ) für die offenen Worte, ehrlichen Perspektiven und die Inspiration rund um deutsche Weine. Father’s Day 2024 “Be ready at 2:30 PM,” was all I knew about Father’s Day last Sunday. I anticipated being blindfolded and having my hearing muffled, as has become our long and consistent tradition. I love being surprised and my two girls know how to lean-in on serving me surprises. . However, I was not at all in the mood. I was feeling down, and I was also feeling guilty, I still am, for reasons now obvious, as the tragic & sad loss of a father* within the community I love had come to light. This heartbreaking news was now doubling down on other, unassociated, sad news from over that same weekend. But It was Fathers’ Day and I needed to burry those feelings and rise to the occasion—at least outwardly, or so I thought. . As it turns out, I have never had a more important Father’s Day. Through my girls, because of my girls I eventually, unexpectedly, found myself only in the moment. I was utterly conscious of my good fortunes to be able to spend the day with my two joyous, loving daughters, who are my motivators, inspirations, and pride. On the way home, I shared the painful news with them. My two teenagers will all-too-soon be leaving home, we were all now coldly reminded that we never know when our time together will cease. May we always, “…cherish the bread before there is none, discover each other before we leave, and enjoy each other for what we are while we have time.” Isi and Sofi, thank you for the gift of Father’s Day, every day. I love you both immensely for who you are and for how you carry yourselves. I am a very proud and fortunate papi. Big hugs with love for now and forever, dad *Your light has not dimmed. Our last day in New York for this road trip USA… staff training with our importer @skurnikwines… speaking about our biodynamic farming, solutions we find in the nature around us, the advantages, global warming and the effect on the future of our wines, the workflow… it is just great to expand/exchange knowledge by sharing🙌🍀❤️. We loved every second of it🙏🙏🙏🍀🍀🍀❤️❤️❤️. We had the opportunity to finish our trip in style before leaving to the airport : some “healthy snacks” and “drinks” at the bar of @elevenmadisonpark 🫶🫶🫶💥💥💥⭐️⭐️⭐️👩🏽‍🍳. “Eleven Madison Park” is the well known 3 Michelin star restaurant of chef Daniel Humm. The thing that really triggered us is that the menu is entirely vegan! 🫶🫶🫶🍃🍃🍃 The dishes we had were all delicious and super inspiring, they burst with strong flavours driven by in season vegetables, fruit and fresh herbs. The signature dish: Tartare of carrots with rye toasts is grifted on our tastebuds for a long time to come! 👌👌👌. The service is just amazing, you feel so welcome, every member of the staff tries his/her outmost best to make you feel at home… rarely experienced this high standard all over the line in this kind of restaurant. We had some beautiful wines to pair with the dishes: A skin fermented Muscat/Scheurebe in a cloudy style, Himmel and Erden II 2022 from Christian Tschida from Burgenland in Austria followed by a « on point » Riesling 2013 Viesslinger Schön from Veyder-Malberg from the Wachau, moderately sweet, a great match with the Tartare of carrots. A classic Cabernet Sauvignon driven Margaux from the underrated 2001 vintage, Château Rauzan-Ségla and to finish on an elegant note : 2017 Pinot Noir Freestone-Occidental by Stephen Kistler, as the say in New York, wavy 🤣🤣🤣👌👌👌.
