John Brown and the Siege of Lawrence, September 14–15, 1856

Out in front of our little storefront, 170 years ago today, one of the legends of American history stood his ground and rallied a frightened people:

On the afternoon of September 14th, 1856, the Free State settlement of Lawrence, Kansas Territory was threatened with invasion by an army of 2700 Pro-slavery Missourians under the command of Generals David R. Atchison and John W. Reid. Encamping near Franklin, four miles southeast of Lawrence, the Missourians were determined to wipe out the town that stood as a symbol of New England abolitionism.

Less than four months earlier, Atchison and Sheriff Jones led the Sack of Lawrence, destroying the Free State Hotel and the Herald of Freedom and Kansas Free State presses. In the ensuing months, Lawrence was blockaded, and by mid-August, battles were fought in Douglas County at Fort Franklin, Fort Saunders and Fort Titus in an attempt to loosen the stranglehold on supply lines into the half-starved Free State fortress. Now the townspeople, armed with everything from Sharps rifles to pitchforks, converged between two circular earthen forts on Massachusetts Street and prepared to defend their town.

Present and heavily armed that afternoon was John Brown…

Being told what to do every 5 seconds can really suck the fun out of taking photos together.

And you deserve photos that feel like you guys are just hanging out like you always do.

For Sydney and Josh that looked like…

Them laughing and sipping on their favorite drinks.

And me just letting them “talk to each other at the beginning and “slowly” work into full picture-taking mode” according to them (and I have the receipts to prove it).

That’s why Signature Bar Sessions are inspired by you and your relationship, allowing your personalities to fully take over.

Just the two of you, spending quality time together while I document what already exists.

Because your relationship is one of a kind.

Your photos should be too.
If that sounds more like your style, my inquiry form is waiting in my bio 🍸

If ‘I’m down for whatever’ is your usual answer when it comes to date night…I’m about to make you look REALLY good. 😏

You know that date night you keep saying you need to plan?

Consider this me planning it for you.

Especially if your partner is usually the one picking the restaurant, making the reservation, or finally ending the 20-minute:

“Where do you wanna go?”
“Idk, where do YOU wanna go?”
conversation.

If you’d much rather just get in the car and spend intentional time together, click the link in my bio and reach out about a Signature Bar session.

My Signature Bar Sessions are basically a downtown Kansas City date night with photos built into it.

You pick a date.

I help you choose the bar, make the reservation, and plan out where we’ll go after so you don’t have to spend three nights Googling “date night ideas in Kansas City.”

Then you get to tell your partner:

“I already made us a reservation.”

We’ll grab a drink, take some photos, explore downtown together, and by the time I put my camera away, you’re already dressed up and out for the night.

Go get dinner.

Find somewhere for dessert.

Stay out later than you planned.

You get the photos, obviously.

But you also get to be the one who planned date night for once.

And if your partner’s love language is hearing “I made us a reservation”...

I have a feeling you’re about to get some major brownie points.

Save this for the next time it’s your turn to plan date night, then hit the 🔗 in my bio when you’re ready for me to do most of the brainstorming for you.
