Highly ineffective Jiu-jitsu doesn’t need to be boring….

The roll to black hole is super clunky, needs some work but maybe there’s something there. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Should probably now go and practice X-collar choke. 😆

Disclaimer! White belt total beginner young kids, no hate or critique please 😂🤦🏻‍♂️

Grappling (Jiu-jitsu in this case) gives your kids self defence super powers. In a 1 on 1 situation, a child with mat time like this is almost guaranteed to easily overcome anyone of the same size and strength with no training.

The round shows:
- Dealing with the shock of getting thrown on the floor
- Getting your legs back in front of you
- Getting back up and on top
- How to not let someone pin you on top by moving

It also shows 2 kids being controlled, whilst releasing aggression and stress in a controlled and supportive environment.

Why would you NOT get your child into this?

Just over 3 months ago, my 10-year-old son Rohan started BJJ under the watchful eye of coach @johnfknjackson at @rgamarlow .

Watching him step outside his comfort zone, build confidence and embrace something completely new has been incredible. He’s been giving 100% in every session and doesn’t matter how hard it is he leaves with a smile on his face.

Then we decided I should join him.

At 50, I wasn’t entirely convinced BJJ was something I should be starting at my age after years of wear and tear on my body.

BUT as my close friend and striking coach @alphapadwork of 17 years said the mats come calling!

So here we are. Father and son. Both white belts. Both beginners. Just at slightly different stages of the same journey and 100% committed.

Never less than 100% 🚀🧨💪🏻

…but there’s 2 sides to any story.

This was taken after a few hard rounds.

Story 1: The crazy workout stats, the jumping around like a lunatic and maybe looking like i never need a break or a rest. I don’t take rounds off no matter how bad I feel and I will push till my body crashes (which happens) Then I’ll go again. 100mph or don’t even bother. 💪🏻

Then there’s the other story.

Story 2: The truth that I had bad sleep the night before, felt like there was nothing in the tank, I was almost dreading how hard training was going to be before i got there. I felt tired, flat and not up for it at all.

I made the decision that story 2 was not how it’s going to be. My responsibility is to show others that you don’t have to settle for that. You can always be the best version of you on any day. That’s up to YOU.

There’s always niggles or little injuries. I ALWAYS feel tired 😂 Everyone feels tired, life is tough. I get it. That’s story 2.

You don’t need to be a coach or a gym owner to show and motivate others. I’m always motivated by those that don’t stop in life, who get on with their life and work hard at everything they do. The ones who say no to barriers. Anyone can wake up tomorrow and adopt this mindset, which in turn motivates those around you.

Let’s go 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Somewhere I belong.

Being in this moment, with these guys, fuels my soul.

Having a contact sport, where the guys pull together to look after one another, and in turn giving that mental health safe space is vital for so many.

I love the connections, the people, the community and this place we built, with all my heart.
