When an unlucky airplane passenger explodes in Wes Anderson’s new movie, he leaves a prim pair of legs buckled into the seat and an artful spritz of blood on the cabin wall. “That’s my version of real. And in this case, it happens to be this guy getting blown to bits,” said the filmmaker, 56, conducting an interview in a white seersucker suit. Anderson is known for the meticulous way he arranges people and objects in every frame of his films—which makes the rough stuff in them stand out. Read more at the link in bio. Photos: TPS Productions/Focus Features, Roger Do Minh/TPS Productions/Focus Features Writer: @johnjurg

Whether you’re a megabudget Hollywood action movie that needs to overperform everywhere at the box office or, say, a boutique drama from Europe angling for awards glory, Cannes is increasingly the best place to start wrapping yourself in prestige. “It’s not just another premiere,” Paramount Pictures chief executive Brian Robbins said of the new “Final Reckoning,” Cruise’s eighth “Mission: Impossible” movie over three decades. “It’s actually a real piece of art.” And Cannes, said the studio head, “is a great place to do this if you have the goods.” This highbrow film conclave, running through next week, has been taking place on the French Riviera since 1946. It’s a fashion runway, a platform for celebrity gawking and a prompt for the annual question: What is La Croisette? (Translation: the city promenade serving as the festival’s grand entrance.) (✏️: @johnjurg)

Ryan Coogler’s horror film about Mississippi vampires starring Michael B. Jordan is a technical feat. “It’s cine-MA!” 31-year-old moviegoer Ralphio Louis said after the show. “Coogler and Michael B. Jordan, they’re our Scorsese and De Niro combo. Generationally and of course for Black people.“ Read more about it at the link in bio. (🖋️: @johnjurg)

Tony Gilroy is a jedi of screenwriting. He was a longtime Hollywood script fixer, wrote most of the Jason Bourne movies and was Oscar-nominated for “Michael Clayton,” a George Clooney legal thriller that film buffs and fellow writers speak of in reverential tones. If only Gilroy, 68, could sell everyone on the show he spent the last six years crafting. “I can’t get people who have loved all my work to watch it because, you know, it’s Star Wars,” he said. “It just drives me crazy.” “Andor,” the series he created, has a rarefied place in a galaxy far, far away. Hits like “The Mandalorian” have been harder to come by in recent years for the franchise, which has dealt with canceled movie projects and panned TV shows. That has raised fears of stagnancy among a fan community that’s been more pissed off than passionate. The show, which debuted in 2022 and earned an Emmy nomination for best drama series, became a bright spot for fans and the franchise’s reputation, if not a ratings hit.
