This happens all the time. Parents hit a wall with their defiant kids, and send them to me to get reprogrammed.

If you’ve worn them down to the point that they need to call a professional, you’re doing too much.

I’ll advocate for anything that’s developmentally typical. But that doesn’t always mean excusable.

You can’t help your limited worldview. All of us went through stages of ingratitude.

But your parents, if they’re worth their salt, are working overtime to prep you for independence. You need to go easy on them.

If you’re in my chair, then you’ve behaved so horribly your parents must think you have a clinical disorder. I’ll determine whether or not you do. In the meantime, calm the fxck down!

I teach parents how to navigate the difficult stages of childrearing so you don’t need long-term, expensive therapy for things that aren’t disordered.

Since we can’t rush you through your developmental stages (without some kind of lobotomy laser, and those are illegal in most states), I’ll be teaching your parents skills for resilience, boundaries, and systems so they can survive your hormonal explosions without feeling like they’ve failed.

Hear that parents? I’m here for you. I’ve been helping kids and families find stability and understanding for nearly 20 years. I’ve seen enough to know how to help you. I’ve worked with worse kids than yours in places far less accommodating than your house. I’m the counselor your family needs. Link is where it always is.

I may advocate for teenagers, but I’ve got something coming for them next. Parents: chances are you’re doing better than you realize raising your kids. When you need to talk to someone who understands families and household systems, and looks for the reasons you need support and encouragement rather than therapy, I’m your man. North Carolinians are welcome, virtually or in person. Link is where it always is.

I’m having an excellent time at the mental health fair at Carrboro Town Commons. I’m grateful to my friend and colleague @pretti_rita for organizing this excellent networking and outreach event. Also present is my venerable stepmom who has taught me more than she realizes about how to structure a home that gets kids to respond. Spreading my message of support for parents of hard-to-raise kids. We’re here till 8 pm so come get a sticker!!

I’ve watched it happen since starting my work in the public sector nearly 20 years ago that behavior programs have a tight budget and are always at risk of losing funding. Therapists are leaving agencies, sometimes the staffing quality at programs is reducing, and waitlists for eager consumers continue to grow. I’m a DIY kind of therapist. Work with me and you won’t need me forever. That’s the purpose of this anyway: handing you tools and plans and watching you get amazing at building with them. Consider this: you might not need a program for your kids. You might just need a better plan. Let’s work together. If Siler city is a tad remote for you, then we all know how to use screens. You’re holding one now to read this. Link is in the usual place.

Those screens didn’t walk into your house on their own. You brought them in. That means you can take them out. Throw them in the lake. Run them over with the car. That’s not neglect — that’s a decision you’re allowed to make as the person who owns the house and pays the bills. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that. But if you’ve lost control of screens in your home and you’re tired of fighting a battle you should have already won, I’ve got a plan we can customize for your family. Link in bio. Let’s talk. Local to central NC, and virtual throughout the state.

If your children have ever made you question your fertility, you aren’t alone. Parenting is hard, and it’s kind of supposed to be. Kids learn to misbehave without any training, and they often surprise us with what they have to be taught about right and wrong. In my time as a counselor I’ve learned that a lot of problems can be solved by empowering parents to create a structure at home, and teaching them what to expect from their young people’s behaviors. Link in bio, taking clients now in person in Siler City, NC, and virtually all over North Carolina.

What I like the best about treating parents instead of treating kids is fewer sessions are needed. Most parents insist their children keep going to therapy because they mistake a typical developmental stage, with all of its ups and downs, for a mental health problem. When I teach parents what’s normal and how to respond to it, they do the work themselves, and things get better faster. This means families save money coming to me. Let me know when you’re ready for some peace in your home.

I am not bagging on my group practice. We need them, I need it, they are a fine place to start and a great laboratory for learning the industry and feeling out the kind of therapist you want to be, and what kind of care you want to provide. But the take-home pay means you’re working around the clock. There’s no salary. You only earn the sessions that are kept by the clients who show up. So even if you plan for a great week, anywhere from 3 to 10 people might cancel or no-show on you, and because it’s largely Medicaid, there is no compensation for no-shows. It’s exhausting. The system is an exhausting one that can break people, and this is why I have started my practice. I love what I do, but I can’t do it half dead from exhaustion, and working at a breakneck pace to keep up with the cost of living. That said, to my clients who have taken the leap to join me in this adventure, I am grateful. I look forward to helping you resolve the things that affect you, with my energy intact, and my mind sharp.

Before I was a clinician, I served in Starfleet’s elusive Section 32 as Ensign Mariner’s juvenile justice officer. Thanks to her, I leveled my game up and started my own practice.

My young client the 3rd grade has made so many of these books with me. He’s got a main character who is a dragon hatchling in elementary school named Baby John. We’ve been using this technique to teach him extended focus, self-control, and finishing what he starts. He’s really into it, and the school library is full of the book he’s made. He feels really accomplished, and it’s great for his self-esteem and sense of self-worth. I wish I had more time to do a better job drawing. But when he tells all of his friends that he did the drawings, I think my rushed style makes that claim believable.
