We’re excited to launch a special charity t-shirt auction in support of Amaze, featuring 30 hand-painted, one-of-a-kind designs created by @johnnycarrollpell, a very talented Sussex-based autistic artist.

Every t-shirt is completely unique (there’s also one tote bag) and they are full of colour - celebrating creativity, individuality, and neurodiversity. All proceeds from the auction will help us support families with children with SEND.

Huge thanks to Johnny and his family for donating his wonderful designs to raise money for us!

Bid on this wearable art now - auction ends 31st May and the link is in our bio.

Aren't they fabulous? Please share this post far and wide to ensure the auction is a success. Lots of bright paintings of faces on white t-shirts laid out flat on the floor.

NEW EXHIBITION: Living Things presents a selection of artists from the Project Art Works supported studio at In Residence, 12 Claremont, Hastings.

Across this exhibition, paint is handled with immediacy and freedom. Paintings resist singular readings and open up space for subjective association. Colours, movement and rhythm may suggest seasonal or organic forms but also readily exceed them. The exhibition becomes less about representing nature and more about how meaning is shaped, through mark-making, material engagement and curatorial framing.

Installed in the exhibition space is the film Illuminating the Wilderness (2019) produced by Project Art Works as part of EXPLORERS, a major project we ran between 2017 and 2024.

Open from Friday 17 April – Saturday 16 May.

Artists whose work is in the exhibition includes: Aida Ashall, Connor Ashley, Johnny Carroll-Pell, Stanley Ellis, Siddharth Gadiyar, Gemma, Carl Sexton, Louise Newham, Michelle Roberts, Will Shepherd, George Smith and Sam Smith.

Opening Event, Friday 24 April, 16.00 – 19.00
Join Project Art Works to celebrate the opening of the latest group exhibition. Meet the artists, have a glass of fizz and enjoy this inclusive gallery space in the heart of the America Ground in Hastings.

Opening hours:
11.00 – 16.00, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday

No appointment necessary.

Location:
12 Claremont, Hastings, TN34 1HA.

We are very excited to announce our new billboard commission at East Quay! 💥

This year, the commission has been produced in collaboration with Project Art Works, featuring artwork by Johnny Carroll-Pell. 💫

🎨 About Johnny @johnnycarrollpell:
Johnny is a prolific artist whose work is both figurative and abstract. There is a beautiful synergism between the dynamic movement of his work and the way he moves around the studio, clearly enjoying his work.

Often inspired by nature and people, Johnny regularly creates large scale paintings of scenic landscapes and life-size and larger-than-life figures of animals and people. Johnny makes smaller drawings of instinctively interconnected shapes and patterns using charcoal, ink and paint pens. His use of vibrant colour is confident, considered and joyful.

Johnny started painting around the age of 10 and creates some kind of art most days at home. He has recently moved onto making sculptures in clay and wood and using found objects. He likes to listen to music when he’s creating and will often dance at the same time!

ℹ️ About Project Art Works @projectartworks:
Project Art Works collaborates with people with complex support needs, families and circles of support. Their practice intersects art and care, responding to neurodivergence, its gifts and impacts. Challenging paradigms of inclusion, it spans direct practical and holistic support, film, events, projects and exhibitions.

Their studios provide the conditions for a broad range of autonomous and collaborative practices with neurodivergent artists, who take part on their own terms. Alongside the studios, the Support Collective brings together people who care for people with complex support needs where we share our experience and protect our rights through training, resources and advocacy.

Project Art Works is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation.

➡️ Stay tuned for photos of the billboard in situ coming soon!

Had a great time last night at Dean Stalham's Hot Tap Theatre in Hastings: poetry performances from the brilliant Henry Normal, Katie Taylor and yours truly, surrounded by paintings from Art By Johnny. Great to see a full house of forty people on a stormy night; thank you to everyone who came!

KALEIDOSCOPIC REALMS | ARTIST FOCUS | In the pale grey room we find three rather large-scale works by the force that is Siddharth Gadiyar. Sid creates one of these every week during a three-hour session at Project Art Works in Hastings. His mother thoroughly documents every work so you can see how they change across the three hours, and trust us when we say some make drastic transformations. We will share a few snippets later this week of one during its creation.

In this exhibition you’ll see three very different works - we worked with Sid’s mother to choose works that show three differing styles that Sid goes back to time and again, except the figurative one, as that is pretty rare! Look closely at his works and you’ll see small bits of tape that mark out shapes that he goes over with tape - fascinating to watch this process.

A little more info:

Siddharth Gadiyar (b.1998) is an extraordinary and prolific image-maker, who constructs a new work of considerable scale, each week in a three-hour supported studio session at Project Art Works, Hastings. His art is big and bold, an unfettered exploration of pattern and colour, that returns time and again to his signature motif, the circle. Siddharth had a solo show at Phoenix Art Centre in Brighton (2019) and has featured in group exhibitions at documenta fifteen (2022) and Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Newcastle (2023).

“I can distinctly remember the moment that Sid’s huge abstract pieces (which were rolled
up) were laid out on the floor, and one by one opened, looked at and discussed. It was like watching beautiful, exotic, giant carpets being unravelled. I was swept away by the sheer size, colour and captivating joy of each piece. I had a viscerel reaction. Understanding some of the numerous challenges Sid faces everyday - and that Sid isn’t able to explain or tell us what any of this artwork means - adds a whole other layer to the magic of his paintings. They have passed through the filter of ‘Sid’, who experiences life in such a different and largely unknown way to the majority of us.” – Angela Pell, Writer
