Quitting Smoking Creatively- Jani Kacova @jokou.art

Jani didn’t like being addicted to smoking, but found herself trapped in a cycle with it due to many contributing factors of her childhood, neurodivergence, and navigating adulthood in a new country. She struggled to quit, going as long as eight months at a time before falling back into the habit from “just having a couple pulls.” Jani finally found her way out by following her heart’s wisdom and soothing her busy mind and hands with artistic expression.

1 month in the UK, 3 distinct lenses, 1 common thread: realizing how we deeply feel and connect through dance.

From navigating the chaos (😌) of the Edinburgh Fringe to presenting research in London, August/September was a whirlwind of shape-shifting:

🎭 As a Producer (𝘏𝘖𝘓𝘓𝘖𝘞𝘌𝘋 𝘔𝘈𝘕 𝟧.𝟢 @the.hollowed.man ): On the ground along the Royal Mile — writing pitches, flyering, and adapting creative strategies. As a small team, we outperformed our expectations and built deep, lasting connections with the local Butoh community.

✍️ As a Reviewer (𝘋𝘪𝘷𝘦(𝘳𝘴𝘦) 𝘋𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 @divedance.uk ): Sitting on the other side analyzing shows, resisting the rigid star system, and witnessing artists moved to tears simply because their work was truly seen and understood.

📚 As an Independent Researcher (TaPRA): Straight from the Fringe to presenting on Butoh in London, grounding all those live, visceral artistic encounters back into academic inquiry.

✨ What’s Next?
Now that the dust has settled, I’ve officially relocated to Hong Kong! 🇭🇰

Experiencing performance from these different angles reinforced one thing: the sensory depth and presence we experience in dance — whether performing, producing, or watching, doesn’t have to stay inside the theater.

I’m currently developing various new initiatives here in HK focused on translating those heightened sensory experiences into our daily lives.

More details to come soon. To everyone who crossed paths with me in Edinburgh and London: thank you for the inspiration, warm connections and energy. 🥰

A few images from the figurative sculpture class I ran last weekend, creating a half life-sized figure. Thank you to all the new people who joined us, and the ones who have been before. Looking forward to the next class, I am thinking of trying something new and completely different!

One of my favourite hobbies is connecting with strangers from all over the world. It makes me feel inspired, connected, and full of storytelling motivation. ✨✍️

More than three years ago while doing my Master’s in Edinburgh, I had a conversation with a talented artist on the street. The same evening, I was invited to a dinner full of strangers. Since then, I’ve been invited into these healing potlucks and jam sessions now and then when living here. Moments that feel like I’m in a film. 🤗

Thanks @edinburghink ❤️

I also did a wee art swap with @jokou.art such an adorable birdy badge 🐤 😍

On top of their incredible skills and artwork, they are also such lovely people! 🥰 Roll on day three!

I use masks in my work a lot, as I have experienced physical & emotional abuse since 15. This is to depict how our masks can look intriguing, interesting and catchy whereas the withholder can be the villain or the one being abused, you can’t tell.

The Biblical tale of Judith and Holofernes is a recurring theme for me over decades. It has a lasting impact due to the portrayal of the subject by Artemisia Gentileschi. The passion and torment that she revealed in her depiction was a correlation of her personal torture. Not only coersed and raped, but the indignity and victim shaming that she had to endure in court. Including her fingers being damaged.

This is poignant for me as a survivor of domestic abuse in many forms. Including many years and continued assisted abuse by the family courts.
