Before any group sets foot on a plane, there's a process most people never see.

For student teams, it starts months earlier with behaviors - I run everyone through the Myers-Briggs personality test or the StrengthsFinders psychometric, not for fun (okay, a little for fun), but because it's the fastest way for strangers to learn how each other operates before they're stuck together for weeks.

The instinct is the same no matter who's traveling. The tool changes - sometimes it's a personality test, sometimes it's just the right questions asked early - but the goal doesn't: give them a fast forward to getting to know someone well.

The real test comes on day 6, when someone's tired and someone else wants to push on, and the trip runs on whether the group can actually say that to each other. Part of the prep is giving people the language for it before they need it - so a disagreement about pace doesn't turn into a silent, miserable afternoon.

Theme was often already half-decided - a partner organization, a program's mission, a destination that came with its own built-in purpose. What was never handed to me was the group. That part I had to build every time, from strangers, in a matter of weeks or months.

This is the part that never makes it into anyone's photos. But it's the part that makes the trip work.

Where are we going next?
