Today, Dark Cornwall Studio felt exactly as it should: alive.

Local filmmakers were shooting a documentary in the studio, our crew of creature designers and costumers were working their magic in the workshop, and incredible artists were bringing us their creations for Kalan Gwav. I even managed to bag an hour with a brilliant musician to discuss the Dark Cornwall Fête and a few other projects.

If I could bottle up the joy and satisfaction I felt today, I’d be a rich man.

This is what Dark Cornwall Studio should feel like: alive with innovation, passion, honesty and hope for the future of the creative industries. A house of hustle.

I know not every day feels like this, but this is one I’m going to treasure.

Tomorrow’s event, LOOKING IN, now at Staffordshire St on the 13th May. A brilliant selection of films about the diverse voices in folk and British culture, from those whose role in the story of what it is to be British is often overlooked, to those inventing new ways of telling their stories.

Tickets in bio. Doors are at 7, films at 7.30. No need to do anything if you have the original tickets for Moth Club.

🔹Crossing Continents by bbfc (angeline Morrison, Bianca Wilson & Marcus Macdonald) and Dorothy Iskrzynska

Crossing Continents uncoveres the hidden African roots of British folk music, drawing on community-led research at the Fitzwilliam Museum to explore how Afro-indigenous instruments shaped the traditions heard today.

🔸 ABasket Full of Eggs by Lisa Smith

Romani filmmaker and advocate Liza Mortimer unearths her family’s musical legacy in the archives of The English Folk Dance and Song Society, revealing how her great-grandmother, Minty Smith, and other Romani people played a vital role in preserving England’s traditional folk songs.

🔹The Land Remains by Boris Thompson-Roylance

As folklore and nationalism rise in parallel, The Land Remains explores Britain as an island shaped by memory, migration, and the persistence of the past in the present.

🔸Gocki Lorden by Bunny Ladd

Gocki Lorden is a Cornish language short film, told from the perspective of Gocki as he documents his fragmented memory of his fall from grace after being the favourite clown in Tintagel for King Arthur.

🔹Old Ned by Jon Rudd

An oral history of the creation, performance, and legacy of the locally beloved guise beast Old Ned, and his role in the revived tradition of May Horns held annually in Penzance, Cornwall.

🔸Catherine by Mars Saude

A few scenes from a lesser-known Grimm’s fairytale, transposed to the West Cumbrian landscape, quickly jettisoning half the story.

This Sunday (19.04.26), @mayhornspz will be holding a fundraiser-cum-film premiere at @pocketfulofstones in Penzance from 2pm. There will be drinks, music, the aforementioned film premiere of @jon.rudd’s new film, Old Ned, as well as a raffle with a selection of artwork up for grabs.

I don’t normally offer my prints for sale, so this is an opportunity to support a real, living folk tradition as well as an opportunity to have a high quality photographic print of my work to hang on your wall!

@aaf_film_lab is my go-to for all of my exhibition prints and film development. Ian and the crew are always a treat to work with, and popping in to see them has become a ritual of its own whenever I’m in Truro. Thanks guys, these prints wouldn’t be possible without you guys.

After this Sunday, it’s not long until the actual May Horns kicks off in early May. It’s one I’m looking forward to the most this year!

We're really looking forward to the premiere of Jon Rudd's film Old Ned on Sunday at Pocketful of Stones in Penzance. There will be three opportunities to catch the film which has been accepted into the @offbeatfilm festival and will be screened in London in May. On Sunday there will be a chance to get to know the filmaker and the people behind the Raven King himself. Enjoy some Cornish made Gin or Rum and relax to the sound of the very talented @annadowling.fluff between showings.

We'll be holding a raffle for the big day itself, with some very limited edition offerings that are definitely not unwanted Christmas gifts; A very limited number of photos of the Old Ned promotional shoot by @lyraandmothphotography, some classic May Horns photos by @folktographic and original drawings by our teazer @bexbc

You will get automatic entry into the raffle if you pay the donation on the door. All tickets after that will be £1 a pop. Splann.

We are beyond excited to share this with everyone! You may have seen Jon Rudd's new short film about our star Old Ned has made it to the official selection stage of the @offbeatfilm competition. While it will soon be screened in Londinium, we have been given the wonderful opportunity to premiere the film right here in Penzance! How perfect! Screenings will take place between 1 & 4 pm on Sunday 19th April at @pocketfulofstones with a suggested donation of £3 on the door. More details to follow.

Flashed up the digital camera on Saturday for @toner.pz photo walk in Penzance.
Matt managed to organise all the different types of light within an hour and inspired us to seek out details in textures, shapes, colour, light, birds, clouds and cracks!
Genuinely enjoyable. Met a great bunch of people. Was brilliant to see what caught their eyes. Looking forward to the next one.

Come and enjoy a positive film-focused start to the New Year! Join us for this special four-day workshop in the inspiring surroundings of St. Ives, Cornwall, where we’ll explore the art and craft of experimental analogue filmmaking. This immersive opportunity takes place in the St Ives, offering the chance to start the year learning new skills whilst enjoying wide open beaches and the wonderful Atlantic swell and surf! Porthmeor and the Coast Path come alive at this time of year where we feel at the very edge of the land. We plan to immerse ourselves in the interplay of light, nature, and film! Special focus on using coastal plants and sea water in our DIY film processing, noticing the changes in seasonal plants and early new growth along the coast path (Alexanders and 3 -cornered leek :)).

A love letter to February ✨

This time, last year, a small group of creatives were throwing around some ideas to celebrate the gentleness and magic in eloping in those quiet, wild months before spring unfurls. We got together one frosty morning and my beautiful friends @maekingthings & her Matthew donned some exceedingly cute outfits and frolicked hard in the chill of deep winter and tucked into the worlds most decadent desert table beautifully crafted by @naughtynonnas 🍰 I adore weddings this time of year and am so excited to have two intimate celebrations to capture in the dreaminess of February light ✨ I don’t know who needs a reminder of the beauty to be found in the deepest, bleakest times of the year or who just loves these months as much as I do. Light to be celebrated, candles to be lit and fireside’s to be snoozed by. This has to be one of my favourite dresses ever by @ailsamunrodressmaker - those gorgeous ruffled layers and white velvet bodice with puff sleeves 😍 A daydream of a dress. Thankyou everyone who contributed to this fun little creative get together, keeping ourselves inspired in the quieter months ✨

Phew! Busy last day :). Thanks to @jon.rudd for sharing low-fi sound skills and to everyone for enthusiasm and fun! Amazing how many different types of outcomes we achieved with different kinds of stocks, kit and processes. From the latest @fomapan standard 8 neg stock to 1970s Kodachrome via Kodak sound stock! We also had 50ft of fresh Kodak Tri-X left to shoot and send to the lab - thanks to @kodak_shootfilm and @digital_orchard for generous support of our 2024 programme with stock, process and telecine :). Lucky us!
Fancy getting involved? We still have places for our Deep Dive in a tower in Somerset (!) and DM for details of short courses/weekenders before the end of the year. Will be posting plans shortly :)

A little re-introduction! Hello 🌝 We’re a little family team (well currently just Jon and I but sometimes Lyra helps out 😅) and we travel all over capturing joy and merriment on our assortment of cameras. We live in the cosy depths of far flung Cornwall but we love adventuring and spending as much time as possible in and on the sea. Our ethos is to live our dream life which means finding every excuse possible to embrace joy and whimsy, make art and eat delicious food. We’re dreamers, lovers of nostalgia and our favourite date is mooching around charity shops and antique stores following a tasty brunch 👀 We’re basically grannies. Lyra included.
