PROJECT 10/15

FRAGMENT
by Jón Martel
@jon_martel_

FRAGMENT explores how product and production transparency can be communicated directly through the product itself.

The porcelain lamps serve as physical product passports, making information about the product’s life cycle and gaps in transparency across production sites in Germany, Portugal, and China visible and comparable.

HANDS-ON-LIGHT // Master Cooperation ERCO x UDK // BDW 2026 Exhibition

On Friday, our master’s students held their opening reception! We’d like to thank everyone for coming out in such large numbers, for the engaging conversations, and for helping us polish off over 40 bottles of wine.

A special thank you to Holm Gießler and Henk Kosche from ERCO for their fantastic support throughout the semester and for making this exhibition possible. Thanks also to Veronika Monheim for the superb illumination and motivation during the BDW.

HANDS-ON-LIGHT // Master Cooperation ERCO x UDK // Winter Semester 2025/26

— Part of BERLIN DESIGN WEEK, info below —

//slide 1-3 TULIP by Iva Coskun @ivacoskun

Tulip is a bedside lamp designed for rest, retreat, and sleep. In the evening, it provides light while integrating intuitively into personal rituals. The graphic structure of the shade creates gradual shielding when slightly tilted, calming the space and reducing visual stimuli. Referencing natural evening light, especially sunset, Tulip responds to urban environments and limited natural light. The design frames the evening as an intimate, transitional moment between wakefulness and sleep.

//slide 4–6 U.M.O. by Philine Lüttel @phinelue

u.m.o. – unidentified movable object is a lamp that focuses on the conscious use of light. A movable ball joint allows the light direction to be freely controlled, enabling both direct and indirect, diffused or directional light. Instead of a fixed lighting effect, u.m.o. invites experimentation and makes light a tangible element in the living space. The luminaire combines playful interaction with everyday usability while remaining a permanent fixture in the room.

//slide 7-9 TRK-01 by Jón Martel @jon_martel_

The project translates the principle of the ceiling-mounted power track into the workspace and makes light perceptible as a movable, sensory element. The luminaire responds to human interaction and flexibly accompanies working processes. As a complementary system to the Erco ceiling track, TRK-01 brings light down to desk level. A dual-layer track, consisting of a mechanical and an electrical level, enables safe, low-friction movement and continuous power supply.

INVITATION BDW // ERCO x UDK // 28.-30.05.

EVENING EVENT & DRINKS Friday, May 29, 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM

The Master’s program in Product Design at the UDK Berlin and ERCO are showcasing forward-looking concepts from a collaborative project conducted during the 2025/2026 winter semester.
Under the title “Hands-on Light,” 15 prototypes are on display, created through an experimental research process exploring the “alchemy of light.”

ERCO is a lighting manufacturer with a strong design tradition—in which Otl Aicher and Franco Clivio, among others, were involved—and to this day combines development, design, and production under one roof. To gain insights into this world of light, students from the UDK visited the company and exchanged ideas with designers and developers on site. ERCO’s core competence lies in technical architectural lighting, where light itself plays a central role. Building on this expertise, “Hands-on Light” deliberately adopts an experimental approach to re-explore the magic of light.

The focus was on the following questions: What would an ERCO product look like for the end customer? How can the qualities of a space be translated into the tangible realm of light within an increasingly abstract reality? How can premium lighting be designed more sustainably—and which topics will be relevant to users in the future?
Can poetry and tactile experiences play a role in lighting our spaces?
In pursuit of these questions, the project explores new concepts that lead to concrete product proposals.

Opening Hours:
Thu, May 28, 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Fri, May 29, 11:00 AM – 10:00 PM

ERCO x UdK // MASTER EXCURSION

Last week, our new master’s students embarked on an odyssey to Lüdenscheid to visit the headquarters and production site of ERCO, the well-known manufacturer of lighting systems. Or as they would frame it: light.

Two days filled with detailed explanations about the company’s history, lighting technology, and ideology marked the start of this year’s cooperation on the master’s design project.

Thank you @ercolighting @mathiashahn.designstudio @justushilfenhaus for making it possible to take a look behind the scenes!
