I thought I was in control of what I ate. For years I treated hunger like a character test. If I was hungry, I was supposed to push through it. That’s what I thought discipline meant. It isn’t a decision. It’s a signal. Your body regulates bodyweight through a neuroendocrine system. Leptin from fat tissue reports how much energy is stored. Ghrelin from the gut signals hunger. The hypothalamus reads both and adjusts appetite accordingly. None of it asks your permission and none of it stops running. That system was built for a world where food was scarce and hard to get. It defends brilliantly against starvation. It has almost no defense against food engineered to be soft, fast, and effortless to eat. Which is why willpower keeps losing. I wasn’t failing a test of character. I was using conscious effort to override something that runs underneath consciousness, every hour of every day. Two things I want to be careful about here. Calories still count. Energy balance still determines what happens to your bodyweight. The point isn’t that the math doesn’t apply. It’s that this system sets the terms of the math: how hungry you get, how full you feel, and how long that fullness lasts. And it isn’t purely genetic. Obesity rose far too fast for that. The biology is the vulnerability. The modern food environment is what pulls the trigger. Gene and environment together, not one or the other. You were never told what you were actually managing. Most of us got handed a calorie target and told to try harder. The system responds to inputs, not effort. That’s the part almost nobody explains, and it’s where the real work is. More on what those inputs are soon.

Happy 1 year Cary 🎂 "It’ll never work.” “It’s too risky.” “What if you fail?” “What if everything falls apart?” Every entrepreneur has heard those voices. Sometimes they come from other people. Sometimes they come from the voice inside your own head. When we talked about opening our second location, there were plenty of reasons not to do it. The fear was real. The risk was real. The imposter syndrome was real. But the mission was bigger than the fear. We wanted to create opportunities for great coaches to build careers doing what they love. We wanted to impact more lives. We wanted to create a place where people could train safely, enjoy the process, get incredible results, and become part of something bigger than themselves. The message might have been, “It’s impossible.” Our response was simple: “Let’s do it.” There have been challenges. Plenty of them. But there has never been a moment when we stopped moving forward. To our Cary team, our Raleigh team, and every member who has trusted us along the way, thank you. Oak and Iron is special because of the people inside these walls. Drop a ❤️ below for the people who make this community what it is

Looking back on these videos from when Cary was still under construction brings up a lot of emotions. Opening a second location was exciting, but if I am being honest, I was scared. I wanted to create career paths for my team and I kept asking myself one question: Can we create the culture we have in Raleigh? There have been challenges along the way, but watching what our coaches, members, and community have built has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. Back then, we hadn't met many of the people who now walk through our doors every day. We didn't know the friendships that would be formed, the goals that would be reached, or the lives we'd have the privilege to be a small part of. Our team has grown. Our Cary community has grown. And through it all, Raleigh has continued to thrive. It's a good reminder that gyms aren't built with walls and equipment, they're built by people. Thank you to everyone who's been part of this journey. We're just getting started.

How you move matters. Too many people think fitness is just about burning calories or lifting heavier weights. We see it differently. Before strength comes quality movement. Before intensity comes control. Before performance comes preparation. That is why you will see our coaches spending time helping members improve mobility, reinforce good positions, and move with confidence, not just sweat. The goal isn't to become good at working out. The goal is to move well for decades to come.

A new program starts this week at Oak and Iron, and that means it's Benchmark Week. Benchmark Week is our opportunity to establish a starting point before the next training cycle begins. These tests aren't about comparing yourself to anyone else—they're about measuring where you are today so we can track progress over the next 10 weeks. This week's benchmarks: 🏋️ Monday: 10RM Barbell Back Squat 💪 Tuesday: 5RM Bench Press 🚣 Wednesday: 1,000m Row ⬆️ Thursday: Max Pull-Ups One of the things that makes our program different is the intentionality behind it. Every cycle has a purpose. Every workout builds toward something. We test, we train, we retest, and we celebrate the progress that comes from consistently showing up. If you've been thinking about getting started, this is one of the best weeks of the year to jump in. You'll establish your baselines alongside everyone else and experience exactly how our coaching and programming work. Our $99 Trial gives you a full month to experience the community, coaching, and results-driven programming that have helped so many people get stronger, move better, and feel their best. We're excited for this next cycle and can't wait to see what everyone accomplishes over the coming weeks. Let's get after it.
