The first two albums I made were a decade apart, so it’s really nice to not have to wait that long again for new music! “Where Would I Be?” comes out tomorrow, and I’m very proud of it.

This song arrived in that peaceful season in-between Christmas and New Year’s. For whatever reason, that period of time seems to be very fruitful for me. (Probably due to lack of stress and the slight presence of boredom?)

Lonely Exile had a lot of heavy matter, whereas this song is dense with the lightness of love. There is a sonic contrast, too.

I can hear my @Beck influence in this song, and he coincidentally is releasing new music tomorrow as well!

Hope you enjoy it!

I have a quick story to tell… but first I want to shout out to my friend @wendy_wegner for her contributions to Lonely Exile.

Wendy is like a sister, and I’ve known her for a long time. She’s a wonderful person, and a great artist, too! One of those “freaks of nature” kind of singers, and a heart of gold to back it all up.

The story is… I sent her a clip of the piano melody for Death Is Not The End Of Me because I was hoping to have a nice high soprano doubling it. She sent me a voice memo a few moments later saying “like this?”, and I never even ended up bringing her in to track that part “properly” because I loved the voice memo so much.

I added a bit of tape simulation, and reverb, and voila- A perfect, beautifully haunting double for the melody!

She did eventually come and track some more beautiful harmonies for Babylon and other parts of Death Is… which made such a great difference in the songs. What an incredible talent, and kind friend.

Love you, sister WendyBird!! Thanks for making the songs even better with your voice on them!

Check out her and her husband Ryan (another one of my closest friends)’s great music @ryanandwendymusic. I know you’ll dig it!

In digging through the archives of my very full photo folder, I found some old videos from last year when we opened for @joshualeventhal . What a special time. 🫶🏼

The videos are definitely longer than anyone is asking for, but trimming them all felt like a level of effort I just wasn’t willing to commit to today. 😂☺️

So here’s a little trip down memory lane. Thanks for coming along. ❤️

ALSO, @jongreig and @cole.mcelheran are just bonkers!!

What do Sufjan Stevens and Taylor Swift have in common? Or the National and Gracie Adams? Beck, Mumford and Sons, Florence and the Machine, John Legend, Jon Foreman, Ed Sheeran, Ivan & Alyosha, Denison Witmer, Andrew Belle, Junaco, and the Twister Soundtrack…? I could literally go on and on.

They all feature the musicianship of Artist, Drummer & Producer James McAlister. @900x

Diving through album liners notes is kind of a lost art now with everything being digital, but I remember seeing James’ name on so many of the albums that I love. It was for sure @denisonwitmer ’s album “Are You A Dreamer?” That I first noticed his playing, and then @sufjan’s album “Come On, Feel The Illinois”. I immediately became a fan.

When I reached out to him, I was amazed and elated that he was willing to work on the songs for Lonely Exile. I can’t imagine how different the album would be without his contributions, and was equally thankful for how nice, and great to work with he was. He kind of has that Midas Touch thing going on where every project he’s involved in becomes more interesting with an artistic flair, which is no simple task.

Thank you, James for working on these songs that mean so much to me. You elevated the art significantly with your contributions. If you haven’t had to chance to check out his personal music, and projects with other artists, you should definitely do a deep dive! 🌊
