Arriving at first by a set of intuitive steps that brought him in direct contact with the light, landscape and Vincent’s vision of the region, once there de Clario immediately set about making 187 paintings, the very same number that van Gogh made during his 14 months in 1888-89 in that unique Provencal city that has now become a cogent component of a timeless visual language. It was through this deep immersion in and meditation on van Gogh’s vision that led to de Clario making the very same number of ethereal images, at times vivacious and filled with colour, at times muted and atmospherically charged with an ‘Arlesian radiance’ whose power directly links to those created by Vincent. It is a series constituting a single work as well as the sum of its parts, each emitting unique singularity. First installed in the 8th century church of Saint Genest this contemplative context intensified the deep feeling of ‘spirit of place’ that was inherent both in the making of each work and in its site-specific installation. In, on and around the MCG at the NFL’s Melbourne Game- San Francisco 49ers vs Los Angeles Rams! I somehow secured a last minute invite to help execute the card stunt. So fun. Everyone was so cooperative ily. I have some extra info below if you care: - The Victorian state government spent $16 million (AUD) to host the game. And looks like it is projected to receive over $300 million (AUD) in return yuhhhhh - Attendance was huge. Wasn’t a spare seat. Total of 100,021 people- which is now the 7th largest crowd for a regular season NFL game. - 49ers smashed Rams. 27-7. - Rams got here the day before, whereas 49ers spent the week here so they were able to adjust to the time difference - LA is currently 7 hours behind Melb, another reason why the game was at 10:30am. Also gave them time to explore the city- which gave them the feeling of a home crowd. As all the aussies loved seeing them dive into the Aussie culture. Eg- they went to a Bunnings sausage sizzle. Here are some beautiful moments from Tina Stefanou's performance work, with Duré Dara on percussion, and Lisa Salvo, Dario Vacirca and Meera on live voice. Tina phoned in all the way from Philadelphia, so her voice was present in the chorus too. Really special. Also pictured are moments from the feast prepared by Ronen Jafari, graced by the most beautiful sitar performance from Saikat Bhattacharya. You can also see Adele Wilkes' luminous lightboxes hanging alongside the audience. Thank you so much to all the artists involved - this was so special.
