9 months post-op THR can look like this. 🤍

When I was first recovering from my hip replacement, I made myself a promise: I would give myself a full year to make my way back into my heels.

Nine months later, here I am.
In my heels.
Back in class.
Dancing for no one but myself.

And honestly, this was the first class in a very long time where I simply reveled in the joy that dance brings to my soul. I was proud of myself, not because it was perfect, but because I know what it took to get here.

To feel strong enough.
Stable enough.
Trusting enough.

To even consider putting my heels back on and moving through choreography like this. There has been a lot of training. A lot of mental and emotional battles. A lot of hurdles I had to work through, not just physically, but within myself.

And it has really put something into perspective for me:

We can be so cruel to our bodies.

We’re constantly chasing an aesthetic. A certain shape. A certain version of ourselves we think we need to become. And meanwhile, our bodies are carrying us through this entire experience of being alive.

This moment reminded me what it feels like to trust mine.
To trust myself.
To understand that my body knows her limits—and that I know how to listen to her now.

Instead of asking her to constantly prove herself, I can thank her for showing up. For carrying me here and allowing me to experience this moment exactly for what it was:

Pure love.
Pure joy.
Surrender.
And yes… even fuck-ups.😅🙌🏼

Because class isn’t supposed to be perfect. I stumbled. I made mistakes. I didn’t hit everything perfectly but that’s not the purpose of dance and I still left that room absolutely beaming.

Because somewhere between the stumbles, I could see it. I could see how much work I’ve put in. How far I’ve come, and that’s what made this moment so healing for me.

It reminded me that I am capable.
My body is capable.
And I don’t have to rush her to get there.

I just have to keep showing up, listening, trusting and letting her show me what’s possible. 🤍

Also, a special shout out to the photographer @fleenormality.ca who happily volunteered to be the PA, Grip, and running playback all while still taking super dope pics 👊🏾

A snippet of The Original ZAYO at Kuumba Festival 2015 on Lakeside Terrace (which no longer exist 😢 saving those thoughts for another day).

I’ve been reflecting a lot this week and taken back to my early days of creating and experimenting. This show was a full production that was only ONE night because I didn’t want to perform this show in the daytime 😅. I wanted to leave audiences with something magical.

The journey to creating and performing this piece was truly something spiritual and if you were in the room, you felt it too.

Thank you @mstoyabedeau @jonna_abrams @irvgotnerve for living this work the way you did. So many Beautiful memories ✨🤍 still gives me the feels until today.
