Genepi Divide le quotidien, one.

We started in Martigny, a Boulangerie in the pl. Centrale. Breakfast? Two croissant, buns with apricot jam, and a black coffee. My Dr told me I should start fuelling long runs with fats, but the first 11km of the day had 1600m of elevation in store and we were in the Alps, so bread it was.

After eating I took a discrete solo run around the block, my first time trying to run since the injury. My heart sank, I couldn’t put the pressure of a jog on it. I came back and kept that to myself. Maybe even from myself.

Two ibuprofen and a reminder my physio called me tough.

The start was the usual joyous adventure at a Divide event, following flags through twists and turns, happy small talk with strangers that would become friends, shared jokes with people that already are.

Then the first small descent through a vineyard. Descending is the only thing I’m actually half decent at in trail running. It was agony. 2km into a 25km day. I spoke to Emma to distract myself, as the back marker guides caught up and started to realise I couldn’t really run. I think at this stage they thought it was technique as they offered some well intended running technique tips.

Then we snaked through a narrow street of huts, the beauty of where we were took over me, this was exactly why I was here, to experience I place I’ve heard about from friends but never been.

Quickly we arrived at La Fromathèque, picked up a lunch of cheese and saucisson, refill bottles, and then an impromptu feed stop a little further up the hill as trail angle Mathilde saw us arrive at a water tap, recognised us from the pub the night before, and brought out fresh apricots and sirop for us to inhale.

Then came the up. Poles out, heart rate up, drinking the views of the nearing snow capped mountains. For the first little while I absolutely loved it. I actually felt fit after 12 weeks of focused training for this.

That passed, the pain grew. I made the call in a beautiful place, Laus and Luke were relieved I did.

The afternoon was a joyous time carving the world’s greatest ice bar. Stef doubted Luke and I could make a shelf. So we made an arch and an ice throne.

Allez.
