As we gear up to this year's John le Carré Memorial lecture on the 25th November, a throwback to 2024. The programme of events for that year's John le Carré Memorial lecture included the @taswestcornwall’s commission of a portrait of le Carré by Gary Long, a well-known local artist and tutor at the St Ives School of Painting.

Gary visited the library to take his reference photos and fittingly depicted le Carré in the Library, with a member of Library staff shelving books in the background.

A pigeon painted in flight gives a nod to le Carré’s first memoir, The Pigeon Tunnel: Stories from My Life. The painting now resides on the staircase at the library.

Book your tickets for this year's talk with Jonny Geller through the Acorn Theatre, or find out more via our link in bio.

Finding herself at a crossroads, Jane Trevally (Lisa fans will remember her from Don't Let Him In) discovers a lost dog on her property and decides to return it. The journey leads her to a house deep in the shadows of Hampstead Heath, a place she escaped years before and never expected to see again. Now, a missing girl, a stray dog and long-buried secrets have drawn her back, but nothing can prepare Jane for what waits inside, and it is fabulously creepy. And so profoundly sad. It's about people doing bad things and the people around them who cannot see it.

Lisa's writing is always on another level and here's a super dark, intricately plotted crime novel that pulls you through a story steeped in suspense, regret and unease. Everyone is carrying an emotional rucksack full of sorrows and bad stuff. And. And! There's a clown. 🤡 eek. Haunting, compulsive and populated by deeply wounded, utterly believable characters, which totally gave me Barbara Vine vibes.

It's out this week - and once again I'm knocked sideways by Lisa's writing.

Have you read this one already? What did you think if so? 🤡

My Husband’s Wife

GRADE: A-

This was my first Alice Feeney book and it was so much fun. This has already been picked up to be developed into a TV show! (If you saw His & Hers on Netflix, that’s also her work). Eden Fox is an artist living in Cornwall. Tonight is going to be her big break, with her first exhibition! She goes out for a run, but when she returns to her home (called Spyglass), her key doesn’t fit in the door. A woman (who looks a lot like her) answers the door, and her husband is confused–insisting that this woman is Eden and that the (real) Eden is a stranger. Eden tries to figure out what is happening, but it seems that the whole village is turned against her. No one seems to know who she is! Meanwhile, six months earlier, a different woman (Birdy) inherits Spyglass from a long-lost grandmother. Birdy is still reeling from a life-changing diagnosis. She’s discovered a clinic in London that claims to accurately predict a person’s date of death. As Birdy realizes she doesn’t have much time left, she becomes determined to right some old wrongs. The stories intersect in a dazzling, twisty way. Nothing is as it seems, and there are countless secrets and twists. I really enjoyed this and found it unputdownable.

A wonderful Braver New World launch last night at the beautiful @dauntbooks in Marylebone. Sincere thanks to the journalists, authors, friends, family and even ambassadors who came along and celebrated the publication of John Kampfner’s excellent and necessary new book.

May this be the start of a much needed wider conversation on political courage: what it looks like and how we can have more of it.
