GP PART 1: Pine Street

There is a lot of lore surrounding SPi, and a lot of it can be difficult to verify. It has been rumored, for example, that part of the company’s sales pitch was the ease with which their parks could be disassembled. It is unclear whether this was official marketing or an inferred benefit, but sources including a former Nashua alderman attest that this feature factored into decisions about the city’s first public skatepark—dubbed “Ghetto Park” by locals—which opened on Pine Street in December 1998. The park is said to have been a trial before the city would commit funds for something more elaborate, and it was stipulated that the ramps be easy to remove should the area become a liability.

As was often the case, the official push for a park came in the wake of complaints from businesses and alongside an ordinance banning skating around the city. The ordinance, adopted in October 1997, remains today, and the list of places it deems unlawful to skate reads like a spot book. It’s no wonder locals recall feeling a distinct sense of hostility from the city.

The Tree Streets neighborhood has long been known as a rough part of town (hence the park’s nickname). And while some felt the Pine Street location was a good fit, others weren’t so sure. During a July 1998 Planning Board meeting, the president of the city’s Board of Alderman objected to the site, referring to the area as “high traffic, high crime, high drug”—a sentiment apparently shared by many. This opposition delayed construction, but the Planning Board ultimately approved the location that August.

The Tree Streets’ reputation seemed of no concern to skaters, a demographic with a long history of occupying spaces avoided by others. On December 17, 1998, a day before the scheduled unveiling, the Telegraph published a photo of skaters who had already started using the park, proving the naysayers wrong. To the city’s credit, they wasted no time following through on their end of the bargain; by April 1999 funding was secured for a park to be built by @teampainskateparks later that year, officially named the David W. Deane Skateboard Park, but known to most as New Park.

I fell so behind on clips/shorts but I’m finally catching up again!

Loved going back to my podcast episode with @freebrockolee_ and @rjbmvhc from @priceoffear !

This was a special gem right here, acknowledging how it will better you as a person to try and fail than to fear trying for risk of failure. I was so fortunate to grow up with friends like them when I was a seemingly much younger youth than many of my peers at the time. This was such a privilege to have them as guests on my program. I’m so happy to see them still pushing new creative boundaries and still chasing their passion in life.

Last week me, my dad @freebrockolee_ , my step mom, and my little brother all went to canopy lake for a cheer bonding day with my team. Once we got there we went to the meeting spot and waited for a half hour and no one on my team that I noticed was there. Me and my family decided to just go on our own. We ended up going on our own and we had such a great time. Thank you for an amazing time 🫶🏻😊💗
