It’s always a pinch-me-moment to be asked to speak on the stellar CCC BA at @bafcsm. This was the third time I’ve been asked over the years, and the students were great: bushy-tailed, smart, astute.

I spoke about clubs, subculture, signs and people who make shit happen through the mediums of fashion, art and the underground, highlighting that there’s longstanding connections – across scenes and spaces and time.

As ever, an idea I live by – that culture is a text – served as the through line. I won’t make the connections too explicit here (you had to be in the lecture) but I will share some snapshots.

“Together, object and meaning constitute a sign, and within any one culture, such signs are assembled, repeatedly, into characteristic forms of discourse. However, when the bricoleur relocates the significant object in a different position within that discourse, using the same overall repertoire of signs, or when that object is placed within a different ensemble, a new discourse is constituted, a different message conveyed.” – John Clarke (1976) in ‘Resistance through rituals’
