Trans athletes are more than a headline. More than a debate. More than what you’ve been told. Share this with someone who needs to meet the people behind the headlines.

When people talk about trans athletes, the conversation almost always centers on who wins.
But that’s never been the thing I’ve valued most about sport.

Boxing taught me that no one succeeds alone. It taught me what communal care looks like long before I had language for it. That our greatest contributions to a sport aren’t always measured by victories, but by how we show up for one another.

Some of my proudest moments in boxing didn’t happen under the lights. They happened while helping someone prepare for a fight as their sparring partner. Sitting in the crowd to support a teammate. Teaching a kid who may never compete but discovers confidence through learning to throw their first punch. Helping someone work through an injury, make weight safely, or simply believe they belonged in the gym.

And today, some of my proudest moments happen outside the gym, carrying the lessons boxing taught me into the lives of people who may never call themselves athletes. The greatest gift sport gave me wasn’t a title. It was a way of showing up for others.

Those are the things sport gave me, and I’m far from the only person whose life has been shaped by athletics.

I’ve lost count of the conversations I’ve had with people who light up and tell me about the sports they participated in growing up. Sometimes they haven’t stepped onto a field or into a gym in decades. But they still remember what sport gave them: belonging, friendship, discipline, confidence, purpose.

There are numerous trans athletes whose names you’ll never hear. They play every kind of sport. They coach, officiate, volunteer, mentor, cheer from the sidelines, and build community. Their contributions rarely make headlines, but they shape lives every day. If we reduce trans athletes to debates about physiology, we miss the point entirely.

Sport isn’t just about creating champions. It’s about helping people become more fully themselves and, in turn, helping others do the same.
