As today is world book day, I wanted touch a little bit on the impact books, and more specifically female characters have on the way we dress, and communicate our own identity.

Having gone through rotations of what was a suitable outfit for a 7yo to attend a school costume parade in (enormous turnip = too hard, Rey from Star Wars = vetoed, as despite protestations, this is NOT a book), left me reflecting on the imprint the literature of my youth has left on how I dress myself.

As a child I was captivated by archaic tales such as A Little Princess, The Secret Garden and Madeleine, whose heroines have melancholy histories, but ultimately end in triumph, all the while backed up by glorious depictions of their rigid school uniforms, crisply pressed blouses and skirts which often proved a hindrance to adventure.

This motif continued into my teens and encountering Jane Eyre, Elizabeth Bennett and Jo March, all of whom used subtle nuances in their mode of dress, indicative of the headstrong passionate hearts which were raging within.

I grew to equate the pillars of Regency, Georgian and Edwardian dressing (amongst others) with powerful woman, and elaborate dresses with expressions of identity, and thus blossomed an unwavering love of gowns, trailing hemlines, and sweeping sleeves.

If you ever catch me on the beach, or the moors looking windswept, it’s no accident. I am attempting to be an impoverished Brontë heroine awaiting her ascendency.
