Favorite race and somehow the least ideal training block at the exact same time🤓

Going into the spring, I had about a dozen athletes who wanted to train for the Buffalo ½ but didn’t want to sacrifice their strength work and skill training at NCA. So we dove in: dialed in goals, built a program that fit directly into our strength cycles, and got after it.

There’s a lot of noise about “hybrid athletes” right now, but balancing real strength work with conditioning isn’t new. It just takes intentional programming, an experienced coach, and consistent athletes.

The fitness this group built honestly blew me away. Lifting PRs, new gymnastics skills, race PRs, longest distances ever, confidence, resilience, fueling, mental toughness…all of it. The best part though was nobody took themselves too seriously. This crew was transparent, vulnerable, supportive, and goofy as hell the entire time. Certified silly geese, if you will 🪿

I put each of their initials on my shoelaces for race day because THEY are what made this so damn special.

What I didn’t expect was how much joy they’d bring back to running for me personally. After more than a dozen halfs (pre-Strava Wild West), a decade+ of social running @bflorunclub, and a severe ankle injury two years ago, running had honestly lost a little of its luster. Somewhere along the way, this group gave it back.

As an athlete, this wasn’t my ideal training block. Luna has been very sick since February, owning a business takes priority over all else 99% of the time, and a small accident earlier this week left me pretty beat up heading into race day (TY @atingeofminge // @buffalo.phac for fixing me up). Times like this remind me how grateful I am for years of consistency in
fitness. It’s never perfect and it never will be, it doesn’t happen overnight, but consistency over years will always outweigh short periods of perfection.

I am so damn proud of this crew and am endlessly grateful for the entire NCA community that showed up for us this weekend. On the course, at the cheer station, tracking from home, and everywhere in between 🥹🤘🖤
