This is just a reminder regarding my concert!
It starts in a few hours and I would love to see any support there!!

Some of you may or may not know me, but I’m a teenage opera singer!

I’m so excited to share that this past year, l was accepted to the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, Uk, 🇬🇧 which is the 3rd best music school in the WORLD to pursue my passion for opera!

In a few hours, I’ll be performing a FREE OPERA CONCERT at the Collegedale University Church, and it would mean so much to me to see my community there!

Information:

🗓️ Tuesday, August 25
⏰ 7:00 PM

A Wizard is never late. NOR is he early.. he posts exactly when he means to.
Big up Goblin @gwilym.howarth for his hot pics and big up all of our trusty sages for pulling up to sup from our cauldron 🔮❤️

The lines from Mary Oliver’s ‘Wild Geese’ used here are:

“Tell me about despair, yours, and i will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.”

For one line you’re sunk into this imagined despair, and by the next you’re suddenly set free, I found this soaring feeling of freedom in some rather dramatic vocal glissandi (they’re really fun tho 😜).

I love these lines dearly, because the focus just widens and widens until suddenly we’re absolved of the pain we’ve been swallowed by, and there’s only this beautiful world.

Wild Geese by Mary Oliver, one of my favourite poems ever, and I’ve set it here for 5 singers, and 5 woodwind.

This moment near the start uses the lines
“You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.”
I tried to find the feeling of that pain in the music, with dark harmony, the harsh sound of jet whistles and fricatives from the singers. It had to feel miserable.

The last two pages of my setting of Mary Oliver’s ‘Wild Geese’.

I can remember the grin on my face by the end of this section - it was our 2nd and final take, and I was so worried that it wouldn’t be enough, but by the end of it I felt such joy. I remember just thinking, that’s it, that’s how the poem makes me feel, all that warmth and beauty 🌺 🌷 🌲

It also helped that all that organising had come through, and it was done 🥳

From Mary Oliver’s ‘Wild Geese’:

Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
Are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination

In this sudden step outwards, I was looking for this lovely warm, full feeling, a reminder that we are all loved 🌺 And suddenly all of that tender beauty opens up to us “the world offers itself to your imagination” flower🌸

A moment in ‘Wild Geese’ where all that I wanted an audience to feel was the overwhelming sensation of love for the world, and in turn, to feel loved 🌺 There is also ecstasy and joy to be found in all of that. Peep @judefraz gorgeous solo.

These repeated meanwhile and and on’s remind me of all the beauty beyond ourselves 🌷

And so it began 🌺

I wanted this opening to feel delicate and sweet, but mostly warm, loving.

Let the short-form content begin. This is one of my favourite moments from my latest work: ‘Wild Geese’ a setting of the Mary Oliver poem that has meant so much to me over the last year.

When writing, I imagined the feel of each line of text, each distinct in texture and emotion, and tried to evoke that in each phrase, ending up with this gentle shift from melancholy into serenity 🌺 . Peep also the tender duet between @imo_sax_ and @pansylaumusic

Thank you so much to everyone I’ve tagged (sorry 😅) for bringing this music to life.
