CASE FILE: NEW KIDS’ BOOKS

Bedtime stories are on trial and I brought in the perfect witness: @joshpyke!

Pyke is an ARIA-award-winning musician with 20+ years in the game. He’s also an epic children’s book author in his own right. So who better to decide which books earn a spot on the bedside table, and which get sent straight to jail?

We put nine new picture books through a round of Buy It or Bin It:

📖 Oh No! by James Foley
📖 The Color Monster by Anna Llenas
📖 Belonging by Jeannie Baker
📖 Zoo Trip by Mary Fowler
📖 Ah, Nits! by Philip Bunting
📖 Pirate Stew by Neil Gaiman
📖 Julián Is a Mermaid by Jessica Love
📖 A Spoonful of Frogs by Casey Lyall
📖 Eric by Shaun Tan

Some walked free. Some did not. 👀

Full episode of @theparentingpolice out now, wherever you get your podcasts.

I ❤️ Music
I ❤️ Live Music
But most importantly…. I ❤️ Aus Music!!

This year, rather than just wearing a shirt, I’m backing AusMusic T-Shirt Day to support the artists, crew and music workers behind the songs we love. When illness, injury or a mental health crisis stops them working, Support Act is there with Crisis Relief and mental health support.

Please chip in and help keep Aussie music on rotation.

Here’s me with some of my favourite shirts over the years! @thespindriftsaga @thejezabels @jimmybarnesofficial @joshpyke and a Dagwood Dab for @mattokine IYKYK 😉

26th November 2026, celebrate your fave Aus Music T-shirt @ausmusictshirtday_official

How much are your goosebumps worth to you?
Spotify and other streamers have made billions by woodchipping every beautiful old-growth tree in the lush musical forest yet have failed to plant any seeds to ensure there’s something left for future generations.

When @joshpyke stopped by the house to discuss his new album, we spoke about what Australian culture is worth to us, what happens if we don’t somehow pay for the soundtrack to our lives, and what it’s like being a musician who goes into bat with lawmakers, trying to show them that our songwriters are a vital part of not only our export economy, but our cultural cohesion.

Search “Better Than Yesterday” where you get your podcasts, listen or watch with the link in the bio, or comment “JOSH” and I’ll DM you the episode

🎵📺 SUPERGROUP is coming to YouTube! 📺🎵 Half chat show / half concert, it's a bit Jools Holland, a bit RockWiz, a bit Countdown 🌟

On each show, I invite three guest songwriters to join me & the SUPERGROUP house band. We take turns playing each other's songs + I interview the guests about their wondrous musical lives.

SERIES 1 starts TOMORROW and features an incredible lineup of Australian artists (and a real hair journey from me). It's captivating, it's thought-provoking, it's funny, it's got the rough-edges and sparkle of a live show - made into little weekly treats to brighten your day.

It's been a huge passion project for me, inventing this mad way of showcasing our Australian music community, and I plan to continue to grow it, tour it, and do my darndest to bring a little more live music back to screens.

Hello pals who are parents. I'm pretty darned excited to be working on an excellent event next week as part of the State Library Victoria's school holiday program. Josh Pyke (yes, the guy you rememember singing Middle Of The Hill and Memories And Dust) is also a children's book author. His picture book 'These Long-Loved Things' is about memories. There is a beautiful installation at the State Library Victoria's Children's Quarter based on the artwork by Ronojoy Ghosh.

Josh will be doing a Songs and Storytelling event next week at the library. 100% guaranteed to be wholesome and heartwarming and brilliant.
WHEN: Tues 22 Sept and Wed 23 Sept at 12.30pm (until 1.15pm)
HOW MUCH: Kid's tickets are $20 - adults at children's price as well. Now that is a good value Josh Pyke gig.
WHAT AGE: Perfect for kids 4 - 10 and their families.
Will there be meet and greet afterwards and book signing? Will there be a craft activity? You betcha! Tag your mates with kids.
Head to the slv.vc.gov.au > What's On > Spring kids program

Musician @joshpyke, best known for winning four ARIA Awards, talks about his close relationship with his mother – and losing her to Alzheimer’s – and how an encounter in a record store led to him marrying his wife, Sarah Tran.

"There were a few really formative relationships that I learnt a lot from, but by the time I met my wife I’d been single for over a year," Pyke says to Jane Rocca in this week’s What I Know About Women.
