Made for real days.

Joy on patterned terracotta, warm floors, and clothes you haven't grown tired of by early afternoon.

Neo on why he'd define the geometry before letting an AI system run, so the thousands of variations it produces still hold onto some logic.

Omari on shibori, zellige, and adire, and how many of the patterns we admire came out of what a process would physically allow rather than what anyone set out to express.

Joy used to think a good pattern had to be bold.

The kind of Ankara that fills a frame and stops you mid-scroll.

Then she saw Banke Kuku's Blue Swimmer dress and kept waiting for something to happen in the print.

The blues sat close together, the movement stayed soft, and nothing fought for attention. She stayed with it far longer than she'd stayed with anything louder.

That's the thread running through this issue. Eden's silk rug came all the way from Malaysia and now belongs to Mimi.

Omari traces his first understanding of process to Uncle Aki's workshop in Thies. Amara turned up with her stripes and a good book.

A room can be completely correct and still leave you cold.

Joy writes that texture is one of the most immediate ways we experience a space.

Before form, before colour, we feel surfaces. How they wear, how they hold, how they carry the weight of an ordinary day.

Her own home makes the argument quietly. Fluffy linen blankets, a rattan basket, natural wood, a low pile rug, a ceramic mug she reaches for without thinking.

Nothing in it performs. Everything in it gets touched daily and is expected to last.

Meet the contributors.

Omari Dupont leads our social impact and documentary work from Dakar.

His first lesson in design came from his mother's classroom in Saint-Louis, where she taught French poets and African folklore and filled every corner with presence rather than posters.

She used to tell him that every room tells a story and you need to listen.

He writes that design is resistance, and that it's also joy.

Amara Duarte coordinates design education and community.

She's a colour-lover, a pattern-chaser, and by her own admission an unapologetic book nerd who can talk for an hour about why one shade of terracotta warms a room more than another.

Her position is that design becomes far less intimidating the moment you understand how it works.
