Looking back on last Sunday… Monira Foundation had a beautiful turn out to celebrate the opening of Tectonic Threads, curated by @frodadottir in honor of @newyorktextilemonth

This exhibition is of 20 Women Artists from Iceland and New York and part of New York Textile Month 2022.

Whether the artist is working in the bustling urban jungle of New York City or in the raw and intense landscape of Iceland, their need is the same: to tell the story of their human experience through their textile art. Textiles often have utilitarian purpose, and one of the concepts of this show points to the role textiles in over consumption, fast fashion and waste. Materials and raw material that would otherwise become discarded, become the clay, the paint and the pencil. Textiles, one of the oldest mediums on earth, have a history that is complex and serves as a powerful reflection of time itself.

The dynamic of the city of New York is similar to the dynamic of the nature forces in Iceland: Strong weather, intense weather, and constant changes in short times. When one looks at the Manhattan skyline from Brooklyn, it is a similar awe-inspiring experience to peering at a mountain range in Iceland. Each interlacement, fold, and layer, tells a story, like the Icelandic landscape and the New York cityscape.

Swipe through to see some details and a quick run through the exhibition!

Exhibiting Artists: Sigi Ahl, Fanny Allié, Elodie Blanchard, Hildur Bjarnadottir, Joy Curtis, Ingunn Fjola Ingthorsdottir, Ragna Froda, Asta Gudmundsdottir, Ragnheidur Gudmundsdottir, Heidi Hankaniemi, Elena Herzog, Victoria Manganiello, Jessie Mordine Young, Maria Elena Pombo, Courtney Puckett, Anna Thora Karlsdottir, Thuridur Ros Sigurthorsdottir, Shoplifter, Janis Stemmermann, Thorbjorg Thordardottir.

Presented by Monira Foundation. Exhibition on view from now until 9/24, Monday through Saturday from 1pm-5pm.

Some of the works that are on view in the exhibition “Tectonic Threads”, curated by @frodadottir, at @monirafoundation at @manacontrmporary, which will be up until 9/24. This show includes some incredible textile art from artists whose practices I deeply admire. Listening to many of the artist’s talk about the work in Sunday gave a whole new perspective and meaning to each piece. I also feel lucky to have 8 works from the 100 Day Weaving Project on view.
.
If you do end up visiting, I hope you have a newfound appreciation for a particular textile technique, or you are able to learn about an artist you hadn’t known beforehand.
