In this episode of Remedy & Rhyme, we enter the wide open heat of the Sonoran Desert with one of its most ancient and sovereign presences: Creosote Bush, Larrea tridentata — known in the desert borderlands as La Gobernadora, the Governess. She is the most common shrub across three North American deserts, the most drought-tolerant plant on the continent, and by some estimates, one of the oldest living organisms on Earth. She’s been presiding wisely over this desert region for at least 11,000 years.

Creosote Bush is a teacher of guardianship, resilience, and faithful presence. She’s a plant who governs not through dominance, but through an unwavering commitment to life in desolate places. For us humans, her gifts are many. Creosote Bush is antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory and has an affinity for the respiratory system, skin, and digestive tract. Even if you don’t live in the Desert southwest, this is your opportunity to meet her.

One of my favorite roasts by our friend Daryl at San Pedro Roasters here in Sierra Vista. His beans are always fair trade sourced. I love this Sumatra and the Honduras coffee. #awesomecoffee

Don’t fashion me into a pinpoint.

I am a spiral -
traveling liminal spaces
dancing between the categories.
A hurricane.
A flowing tide,
shapeshifting into a galaxy.

We recently interviewed Kimberly Kling of Joyful Roots on the Sacred Herbalism segment of the Elder Tree Podcast.

Kimberly is a clinical herbalist and founder of Joyful Roots in Southern Arizona. Through earth-centered care, education, and small-batch herbal creations, she helps her community nurture wellness and deepen their connection with nature.

Her love of plants began in childhood, crafting “magical stews” from Michigan’s wild flora. With a background in Landscape Architecture and Engineering, Kimberly has long explored the relationship between people and the land. Motherhood and a personal health journey eventually guided her to clinical herbalism, where she now blends traditional wisdom with modern practice to support vibrant, grounded well-being.

Kimberly also runs a podcast, Remedy & Rhyme, which weaves poetry and plant wisdom.

In this episode, The Earth Needs More Herbalists, topics explored include the growing need for herbalists in modern times, the importance of health sovereignty, and the environmental cost of pharmaceuticals. Through reflections on plants like blue vervain and rose, Kimberly invites us to remember the mutuality of our relationship with nature and our role as its stewards.

Kimberly has donated a beautiful zine all about Rose, which includes recipes utilising Rose, myth, herbal properties and more...exclusive to our paid Patreon members!

A confronting question for plant people ⬇️
Is being or becoming a herbalist a valid response to the crises in the world today? What do you think?? Let me know in the comments. This is the question that I ask Kimberly in this latest podcast episode. We tackle it together and come up with three reasons why it might just be an adequate response. You know what I mean right?! Sometimes I wonder what the hell I'm doing here, talking to plants and pouring my energy into teaching people how to use herbs for mental wellbeing and how to develop skillful intuitive capacity. I mean, war is everywhere and an ecological crisis is looming. Maybe I should do something more weighty.... or should I? Genuine question. Please respond. #plantwalker #plantlistening #planthropocene #herbalist #theworldtoday #changemakers #westernherbalmedicine #eldertreepodcast #sacredherbalism

I have been fighting a cold all week and last night the cold got the better of me. Yesterday, I listened to this #remedyandrhyme podcast. Of all herbs she was discussing #rosemary. We have a huge rosemary plant in our backyard. One of her suggestions was a steamer. So that’s what I did, I’ll let you know, how it works out! Have you ever done an herbal steamer? https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/remedy-rhyme-by-joyful-roots/id1809605412
